What Causes Pain Around The Eyes, Cough, Breathlessness And Green Bowel Movements?

default
Posted on Mon, 13 Jul 2015
Question: I have been sick with what I thought was allergies for about 5 days now. I have face pain around the eyes and coughing, hacking especially when I lay down. Lots of mucus=clear. Now my bowel movements have turned dark green or black. I was taking fishermans friend for the cough. don't really hurt anywhere just sore from coughing: any ideas.
Went to my chiropractor today, he does body talk. He says I have extra bile in my stool. My kids are worried and so they wanted me to check with real doctors so here I am. I had a very bad experience with my family Dr, in 1995 so hard for me to trust, thanks

Brief Answer:
Suspecting GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease)

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. Based on the information provided, it does sound like a sinus issue, but with the hacking cough I do also suspect a gastric condition that usually results in increased or aggravated cough while in the supine (lying) position. Other symptoms of this condition include:

+Dry cough
+Heart burn
+Chest pain
+Regurgitation of food into the mouth
+Hoarseness of voice (not always)
+Sore throat (not always)
+Bitter taste in the mouth
+Abdominal bloating (at times)
and a few others.

If you can relate to a few or more of these symptoms, then we will have to get an investigation called the '24-hour acid pH monitoring' conducted to help confirm the diagnosis.

The change in colour of your stools can also be due to the various herbs and medications you have taken or could also be due to the gastro-intestinal condition causing your symptoms. Please consider visiting a doctor at the earliest, especially if you do not have a fever.

A few suggestions for now:
+Do not smoke
+Avoid alcohol
+Avoid stress
+Do not overeat
+Eat 5-6 smaller meals in comparison to 2-3 larger ones
+Drink plenty of water
+Avoid carbonated drinks
+Avoid fatty/oily/fried and spicy food
+Avoid pain management medications (e.g. non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications)
+Do not exercise vigorously
+Do not eat anything for at least 90-120 minutes prior to bedtime
+Take drugs like ranitidine, omeprazole, pantoprazole, etc; when you have such symptoms

I hope you find my response both helpful and informative. Please do not hesitate to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.
