Posted on Tue, 9 Jun 2015
Question: Was trying to catch my dog and slipped on Kitchen floor...Hit Face on floor right side, chin and cheek. ...chin now sore to touch and a little but swollen...(hit whole right side of body, hip and shoulder hit first and then face smacked floor).

Does this up my risk of concussion or brain bleed?

how long do I have to worry about bad stuff happening?

I don't take aspirin, am 45 year old female, I do take krill oil, coq10 and vitron c.

this happened about 6 hours ago.

go thank you for your help!

Brief Answer:
Almost 6 hours have passed.Brain injury is less likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for being on healthcaremagic.com.
I am Dr.Ajay Panwar,a neurologist,here to answer your query.

In this scenario, 6 hours have already passed and you did not lose consciousness or had a mental confusion-clearly,you did not have a concussion.Concussion is by definition a transient reversible loss of consciousness/mental confusion, after a head injury in which consciousness usually recovers within hours.

Sometimes,in epidural hematoma, patient lose consciousness after a lucid interval of several hours. So,with 6 hours down, even that appears to be a less likely possibility.

You may observe yourself for a few more hours. If no mental changes or disturbance in consciousness occurs, probably you do not have a brain injury.

However,if you had a head injury too, probably it will be on the safer side to get a plain CT scan of head done.

Waiting for your follow-up question.

Thank you for your answer...am a bit confused by your answer ...so please allow this follow up question.

At this point now, over 7 hours do you think I need a CT scan? I'd rather not have the radiation exposure if I can help it.

Or are you saying if I have symptoms then get one? current no symptoms. ..knock on wood...just worried because of falling.

Brief Answer:
CT Head is not needed if you had no head injury.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for being in follow-up.

Ok..I'll clear the confusion here.

1)Its definitely not a concussion as you did not have any mental changes or loss of consciousness.I hope that is very clear.

2)Indication of getting a head CT scan is-
If a patient had a head injury severe enough to cause altered sensorium(some mental changes) or loss of consciousness. In such a case,CT scan is to be done even if loss of consciousness/mental changes were transient and then improved.

However,if patient had a head injury which did not cause loss of consciousness or any mental changes,CT scan is not indicated. In such a case,if patient is very anxious thinking of brain injury,CT head may be done to rule out such a damage.

In third scenario,if there is no head injury,CT Scan of head is out of question.

So,I mentioned that if you had a head injury and as you appear to be anxious enough, you may get a CT Head done, although it is not an absolute indication here.

Besides,if you did not have a head injury and just a facial injury,CT Head is just out of question.

Hope that I have answered your query. If you have some follow-up questions,I shall be glad to answer else please close the thread, rate it and write a review as your rating will be of help to me.

Thank you so much for explaining it to me...I was incredibly worried because I hit my chin and cheek and was wondering if I could have hit hard enough to cause my brain to bounce around or something.

and I didnt know it (hitting chin / cheek / side of face) isn't considered a head injury but am glad it's not!

read about XXXXXXX XXXXXXX the actress dying after fall during skiing lesson and got wigged out.

I will rate amd leave reviee)w asap - last question...how.long does someone have to watch out for symptoms. ..read everything from a few hours to 72 hours to 2 weeks.

so not sure how long realistically I need to worry..thank you for your time and expertise ...other is greatly appreciated :-)

Brief Answer:
Upto 2-3 days of observation.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for being in follow-up.

I can understand your concerns well.
Practically,In most of the cases worsening occurs till few hours of injury. However,as a practical cut off value,72 hours of observation after the injury is crucial.

Hope that I have answered your query. If you have some follow-up questions,I shall be glad to answer else please close the thread, rate it and write a review as your rating will be of help to me.
