What Causes Pain And Swelling On Neck?

default
Posted on Wed, 17 Dec 2014
Question: Ok...my Dr.'s have told me several times (4:orthopedic & 3 neuro-surgeons) I need at more minimum 3 letters vel fusion on my neck. The pain certainly supports this! Trying to hold off as love n9t as possible for many reasons all of which I'm sure you're aware of. (I'm 56 y-o female) My question is: the last few days my neck has hurt more than any swear word available! I have a spongy-like swelling mainly on left side that at times creates an egg sized bump on the back of my head where it meets my neck and continues down my neck. It moves around and is somewhat responsive to ice--although not completely. . I am totally freaked out by this! Is this serious?

Brief Answer:
More investigations needed to diagnose and manage.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXXX ! Good afternoon. I am Dr Shareef answering your query.

You did not mention the diagnosis for which your doctor advised you fusion on your neck. Based on the history narrated by you, if I were your doctor, after a physical examination of the swelling on your neck, I would advise for an ultrasound/CT scan of the area to know the origin/location of the swelling and then a FNAC(fine needle aspiration cytology) of the same to know the histological diagnosis. Apart from this, I would advise you for some routine blood tests like a complete blood count, blood sugar, and possibly a thyroid function test. Till the test reports come, I would advise you for some anti inflammatory drug along with a proton pump inhibitor for a symptomatic relief. Further treatment would depend on the reports of investigations.

I hope this information would help you in discussing with your family physician/treating doctor in further management of your problem. Please do not hesitate to ask in case of any further doubts.

Thanks for choosing health care magic to clear doubts on your health problems. I wish you an early recovery. Dr Shareef.
