What Causes On And Off Bronchitis?

default
Posted on Mon, 15 Dec 2014
Question: hi my family member recently went thru a health crisis where she had on and off bronchitis for over 6 months, she also had high esonophils in her blood and she kept getting full body hives. when they did a CT of her chest they found Mild mediastinal and left hilar lymphadenopathy, they ended up biopsying it.....thru a bronchoscopy. the biopsy came back negative. she got better, the hives went away and the high esonophils went back to normal now.... she had a repeat CT of her chest and she still has Mild mediastinal and left hilar lymphadenopathy, what are the chances shes has a serious disease ? she doesn't have any symptoms now and is perfectly healthy. the doctor wants to do ANOTHER biopsy . why ? this has me anxious..... why does she have these swollen nodes? she is a non smoker

Brief Answer:
Likely malignancy or parasite from the history

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I understand your concern.
I am Dr. Arun Tank, infectious diseases specialist, answering your query.

In my opinion Doctor is suspecting malignancy or some parasitic infection which can be revealed by the biopsy.

Such a symptoms of on and off bronchitis and eosinophilia with hilar lymphadenopathy is suggestive of either malignancy or parasitic infection.

As first time biopsy was negative, what is going on actually is must be known to us. So probably they plan for second biopsy.

I will be happy to answer your further concern, you can ask me on bit.ly/DrArun.

the bronchitis is gone away. shes perfectly healthy now and has been for 4 months . all blood work is normal , no nodules no nothing, so you think it could be cancer ? ?
the lymphnodes couldn't been swollen from bronchitis ? or maybe sarcoidosis or asthma ??? or something like that since shes back to normal now ?
she did nto have lymphnodes anywhere else not in her spleen , abdomen or anywhere, nor does she smoke. . .or have any symptoms :(

Brief Answer:
Go for second biopsy...

Detailed Answer:
I am happy that she is cured.

As there is repeated bronchitis with mediastinal lymphnodes, there is a need for diagnosis. So Doctor has planned for second biopsy.

I am not giving any diagnosis, I am just putting a differential diagnosis , which can be further confirmed after second biopsy.

Do not worry with my differential diagnosis. Just go for second biopsy. It will guide your doctor in further management.

I will be happy to answer your further query kindly ask me here or you can ask me on bit.ly/DrArun
Thank you,
Dr Arun Tank.
