    What causes occasional dizziness?

default
Posted on Sat, 28 Nov 2015 in Brain and Spine
Question: I have occasional dizzy spells where I feel like I'm going to topple over if I don't hang on. They sometimes last 3-5 minutes. There seems to be no reason for them to come on, as they occur at any time. I have had maybe 3 or 4 of these in the last 9 months.

Brief Answer:
More information needed.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your query and understand your concerns.

Dizziness may be related to several conditions such high blood pressure, syncope ( lowering of blood pressure when changing body position ), cerebellar and brainstem stroke, transient ischemic attack, head trauma, anxiety disorder and finally inner ear dysfunction.

It is necessary first to clarify if you suffer from any of above mentioned conditions.

It is necessary also to ask you to describe your symptoms without using the word dizzy or dizziness ( spinning, moving objects, visual disturbances etc. )

Awaiting for more information......

I guess it would be a spinning sensation. I do have high blood pressure, but take media. Do not know of any other condition except possible inner ear disfunction, as I sometimes lose my balance when closing my eyes.

Brief Answer:
Vertebrobasilar insuficiency.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back.

In this case, most probable condition that is causing your symptoms is sudden impairment of posterior brain blood supply, or vertebrobasilar insuficiency, related to blood pressure changes.

I suggest you to discuss with a Neurologist your concerns and tests needed to evaluate better your condition.

Posterior vascular circulation needs to be evaluated further with MRA or CTA.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Greetings.
