What Causes Numbness On Toes After Knee Surgery?

Question: My son had knee surgery. Including Repair to meniscus and lateral release last Thursday. His toes feel numb. Why? And what should we do?

The numbness in the toes can be due to local soft tissue swelling around the nerve at the level of the knee. This is not worrisome if the fingers are red and the circulation and other sensations like touch and pain are intact in the toes.
Such mild nerve compression subsides on its own in few days as the swelling decreases.
He can keep the limb elevated on two pillows while resting to reduce any local soft tissue swelling. In case there is a muscle weakness and loss of pain sensation or the toes are of bluish discoloration then it is worrisome and needs a medical attention.
