What Causes Numbness And Tingling Sensation When Under Stress And Anxiety?

default
Posted on Sat, 31 Jan 2015
Question: Hi,
I have been diagnosed anxiety and panic 7 years ago. I have been through a thorough full body testing, including 24 hours blood pressure measuring and blood test. They found nothing and diagnosed me with anxiety and panic attacks.

Throughout the years I was able to manage my condition and I felt recovory for some time. However the last couple of months were very stressful and I had high blood pressure sometimes (up to 140-150/80-90). I was able to calm myself down and bring it down to 128/69. I checked my blood pressure about 3 times a day. In the last couple of days I had more difficulty managing this and I had several panic attacks. Which after a couple of hours subsided. I have a Linden method subscription and I phoned them yesterday and they advised me that measuring my blood pressure 3 times a day fuels my anxiety. I have to agree with them it does. Then after the phone call I made a decision not to measure my blood pressure and I felt so much better and felt relief. The Linden method support also told me about my concern of blood pressure that I had to make up my mind if it is due to anxiety or medical condition. They also said that it's of course up to my if I want to make another test to put my mind to rest.

I made up my mind that it is due to anxiety and felt better. But in the morning I got up with numb left hand. I slept on it so I just turned on my other side and waited for the numbness to subside. The numbness subsided but I still had some tingling sensation in my left arm and left leg. I then became anxious that I will have a stroke. That was at 6am. Now it's 9:45am here in the UK and I still have some tingling sensation sometimes in my left arm and left leg. Not constantly though. I did the FAST test and I can smile, keep both arms up and speak.

Should I be worried? Shall I go to the GP or hospital to check this out?

Brief Answer:
Most likely the symptoms are due to anxiety

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for asking

You are a 29 years old male and have anxiety and panic disorder. You have undergone full body testing and 24 hour blood pressure monitoring and nothing significant was found. Later, you started checking BP three times a day and this resulted in anxiety and anxiety fuelled the BP.

Now, you woke up with tingling and numbness in arms. Numbness decreased but tingling is still there. As per my opinion these symptoms are due to anxiety only. Though during sleep on one side due to pressure on nerves and arteries our arms may develop tingling and numbness and on changing position the symptoms subside. In your case due to these symptoms you have developed fear of stroke and this has fuelled anxiety which is potentiating the symptoms of tingling.

And yes this is not due to stroke because-

You are 29 years old and it is very very rare to develop stroke at your age.

Your all investigations and tests came normal.

You have done FAST test and this also come normal.

There is no weakness in arm and its just tingling.

As per my opinion, there is no need to worry and no need to go to hospital as there is no weakness and any signs of paralysis. Check your BP to rule out any hypertension at this stage.

I would advise you to relax yourself, if you have prescription of any anti anxiety drug like Clonazepam you can take it and you will feel better.

Thanks, hope this helps you to reduce your anxiety. Please don't hesitate to ask again for more doubts in follow up.

Hi Seikhoo,

Thanks for your answer. I guess you're right it's just hard to accept. Here are my thoughts. Sorry it's a bit long.

Yes I had full body test but it was 7 years ago. Does this not change the circumstances? All these thoughts come to my mind.

You advised that I could check my BP. If I check my BP now would this not undermine my subsconscious to worry and be anxious? What would it help or change? What if it's high?

For your reference, the Linden method support advised that I do not check my BP for a whole month and check it again end of January.

Now, yes I did FAST test and it's negative but then it comes to my mind that since the blood pressure was high (not constantly but it fluctuated) for some time (eg couple of months) that this tingling could be a pre-stage for something worse?

At what point is it advised to seek medical attention? How do I know if this or any future symptom is caused by the anxiety itself or caused medically by the blood pressure that was caused by the anxiety?

I heard of a 50+ years old guy who had tingling sensations for some days and could not grab the soap at the shower. Then after some days he felt bad and went to the hospital and he was told he came good time as it would have been stroke. Now of course, I can grab anything with my hand and keep it and I'm much younger and I don't know the bloke's diet and fitness - I guess he wasn't eating healthy as usual in this country.

I also had the feeling of irregular heart beat occasionally or jumping heart - but previously I was also told this is also due to anxiety.

Now, I got off the conventional medication a couple of years ago which actually helped me feel better. Nowadays I only use natural medication. I took 2x 475mg Valerian root capsule before sleeping at night and in the morning 1 capsule. I also ordered Rescue spray and pastilles by Bach.

I was wondering if it's a good idea to do sports more regularly. Eg 4 times a week? Or shall I just do moderate exercises in light of blood pressure? Or is it just making up another fear?

As I'm working from home on my own business and fed up with it at the moment as it isolates me I was thinking to change my environment for a couple of weeks and go to my home town to my parents. There I could play music with my brother which I really enjoy and miss, but then I would miss my wife - as she most likely could not come with me due to having a full time job and limited holidays. Not sure if it's a good idea, as sometimes my parents and relatives can also make me anxious. They are also not clear about anxiety and most likely advise me to go to the doctor if I happen to have anxiety there.

I know you won't decide for me, and I'm not expecting you to, just asking your opinion. I don't want to escape as that could fuel my anxiety. But I bought a house in my home town to where we are expecting to move next spring and there are some improvement works to be done that is difficult to manage over Skype. I live in the UK but my home town is in Hungary. So I could take it as a holiday with some house improvement work.

Brief Answer:
Common complaints in stroke are weakness of arms or face or speech

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,

Thanks for asking a follow up question

Yes, tests seven years back don't make much sense, but still you are not in the common age of stroke. Everything came normal seven years back and you have not suffered much significant symptoms after that so as per my opinion there is no immediate need for retests immediately.

Yes, checking BP might increase your anxiety and anxiety will also raise BP but I advised you to check because this will help you in deciding not to go to hospital or ER immediately. As per my opinion BP will come in normal or mild higher range only. This can be taken as normal in your case.

What I have observed during references of patients, most common presenting complaints in immediate stage of stroke are weakness of face, weakness of arms and these are usually progressive. Slurred speech is other common presentation. What I think numbness and tingling are related more on neurotic side or due to some compression neuropathy or due to some local blood vessel involvement.

In stroke blood supply to specific brain areas got disrupted and there occurs weakness in corresponding part represented on brain. So common presenting feature is weakness, slurred speech and not tingling (which is also improving).

You have almost normal BP with intermittent fluctuations and this doesn't increase the risk of stroke.

Yes, it will be good idea to go for sports regularly. This will also help you in anxiety. Good exercise will bring down the BP. As per my opinion this will not make up another fear.

You are taking Valerian root and this is also like an anti-anxiety drug. The drug has been found to act by GABA receptors through which most of anti-anxiety drugs like Clonazepam, Alprazolam etc act. This is probably the reason the drug is helping you.

You are working from home and monotonous life can make anyone stressed. It would be a good idea to change environment. If you have fear of anxiety by going to your parents home then as per my opinion you can go there for short periods of time. This will change the environment and will also not bother you. Or other option is to go for a short holidays away from home with wife. This will serve purpose of changing the environment and will de-stress you.

Just to sum up, from your detailed history as per my opinion and experience these symptoms denote more of anxiety and not of stroke. There is no need to fear.

Thanks, hope this helps you.

Hi,

Thanks for your help before. Those symptoms disappeared. But others appeared.

I'm now back in Hungary in my home town, doing light work on the house I bought. And when I

do that I usually experience either none or little of these symptoms.

Now I feel a deep roaring noise in my head - according to this link it could be sign of high blood

pressure. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003043.htm Which I could imagine. I

still haven't measured it since. The noise is rather light but sometimes stronger. I hear it

mostly when I'm in my room and try to rest or sleep. Other times when I'm out and about especially

in the open air in quiet or working on the house I stop and listen but can't hear it. Other times

I can slightly. This sensation is for about 2 weeks now. It bothers me at night but it also

concerns me.

I also have a light shaky feeling. It feels like shaking inside of my body rather than outise, not

as if I was cold. I've not felt anything like this before. It feels like the accompanying of the

voice. This sensation is for about 1 week. This also comes and goes but mainly feel it when I

rest or want to sleep.

These symptoms happen most of the times when I'm in my parents house. When I'm out and about or

working on my house these do not appear or just lightly.

I took valerian root extract but it seems to me that I had the side effect of heart pulpitations. I haven'taken it since yesterday and the pulpitations reduced. I drink a tea mix that is said to calm nerves.

It comes to my mind several times that I should go to the doctors to check my blood pressure and heart. My brother had similar issues (but he had only heart pupitations as a symptom). He went to a heart specialist and he was said it is due to stress. But it calmed him down. So my brother advised me to do the same, if there is no problem it would calm me down.

I would also like to know if I have high blood pressure for a longer period of time what does it

do to my body? Because that is my main concern.

If any, what tests could I do? I do not want to take beta blockers or any meds. Could you give me

some tips as to what I can take as natural supplement or what I can do (breathing exercise, sports or anything you can recommend) that would make me calm down and lower blood pressure?

Is spa good? It usually relaxes me. Any other tips?

Brief Answer:
Tinnitus is not a common presentation in high BP, though it can occur

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for asking again

The roaring sound you are having could be tinnitus but it is not persistent and is occurring in specific situation only. You are not having these sounds while you are out or doing something. These sounds occurs mostly in night at home.

First of all I would like to tell you that tinnitus could be sign of high blood pressure but in high blood pressure tinnitus is not always found. Tinnitus doesn't occur commonly in high blood pressure and its not a common symptom of high pressure. You have mentioned previously also that you don't feel completely relaxed at your parents home so occurrence of tinnitus is most probably related to stress.

Valerian root extract may cause palpitations in some individuals. But some other natural extracts like St John's Wart can help you. The extract help in reduction of symptoms when taken on regular basis. I would also advise you to follow following things to reduce anxiety-

- Take diet rich in Omega 3 Fatty Acids, like Flex Seeds, Walnuts, Salmon fish, Sardine fish etc.

- Take diet rich in B12 Vitamins. B12 supplementation helps to reduce anxiety.

- Take diets rich in proteins and complex carbohydrates and low in refined carbohydrates and fats. Milk, curd will help in decrease in anxiety.

- Exercise regularly and Breathing Exercises will help you in relaxing yourself. Progressive Muscle Relaxation Exercise (PMR) also help to reduce anxiety. You can take help of youtube to learn more about PMR.

- Avoid excess tea, coffee, alcohol, carbonated drinks. These drinks increase anxiety when taken in excess.

High blood pressure on regular basis may hasten the development of atherosclerosis. But this occurs in persistent hypertension. You don't have high BP, but your symptoms are due to anxiety and stress only. So as discussed earlier also I would advise you to please don't think about high BP again and again. You are absolutely normal and no need to worry. No need to check BP again.

There is no need to take more tests. Checking BP and ECG can rule out any high BP or cardiac problems. Get your lipid profile done on regular basis at least once a year if your dietary habits are not good. Normal lipid profile practically rules out common cardiac conditions.

Thanks, hope this helps you. Don't hesitate to ask again for more doubts.

Thanks for your response.

It's hard not to think of BP or other health problems when I lay down and get up with these symptoms.

Do you have any recommendation I could apply to my thinking / attitude?

Brief Answer:
Follow life style changes and you will be better

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for asking again

As most of your symptoms are related to ill health and you have health anxiety so best way to keep away unwanted thoughts is reassurance. Reassurance helps to keep away the anxiety.

I have mentioned earlier also that most of your symptoms are related to anxiety and considering your age and and history there is very rare chance of having any cardiac illness or stroke. Your ambulatory BP monitoring also came normal which itself puts you in safe position. So there is no need to fear.

I would advise you to follow life style changes as I have mentioned in my last answer. Breathing exercises will help you to remain relaxed and are good for Blood Pressure also. Try to divert your attention away from health related issues while you are at home. Keep your mind cool and start doing some constructive work while at home.

Keep one thing in mind that you are absolutely normal and you have no significant health issues. You are absolutely normal. No need to fear. Put this thing in attitude and you will feel better.

Thanks, hope this helps you

Brief Answer:
Shakiness is due to anxiety only

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for asking again.

Shakiness (like from inside) is a common feature of anxiety. In anxiety individuals "fight and flight reaction" get activated and redistribution of blood flow occurs. This redistribution causes tingling, numbness, shakiness etc symptoms. Light headedness is also a feature of stress and anxiety. There is nothing in your history other than anxiety that can cause headache. So be reassured all these symptoms are occurring due to anxiety and try to follow life style changes I have mentioned and you will feel better.

Thanks, take care. Please ask again for more doubts.
