What Causes Numbness And Tingling Sensation In The Fingers?

default
Posted on Mon, 23 Jan 2017
Question: Hello,

For the last 10 days I've been experiencing numbness in my thumb and index finger in both hands. Sometimes there's a slight tingling sensation as well.

Also, those two fingers have generally been feeling colder than others. Sometimes the sensation spreads to half of my middle finger as well.

There's no pain or discomfort otherwise.

This has never happened before.

I follow a fairly normal diet and has my vitamins checked last year with no deficiencies. I have not been spending any more time on my computer than usual. I have however stopped going to the gym for the past month, before I which I was pretty regular. I also quit smoking three months ago, before which I had around two cigarettes a day.

I am currently not on any medication or supplementation.

What do you think this is? Is this something I need to be worried about? Do you suggest any tests that I should do?

Brief Answer:
Carpal tunnel syndrome/Nerve conduction studies.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX XXXXXXX

Thanks for query.
I am Dr.Ajay Panwar, a neurologist, here to answer your query.

The clinical description which you have mentioned appears to be classical for 'Carpal tunnel syndrome'(CTS) in both hands. CTS is more commonly observed in obese individuals. Further, persons having Hypothyroidism, Diabetes and Rheumatoid arthritis are prone to develop CTS. Does any of the above conditions apply to you? If you are not sure you should get them ruled out by a physician locally.

I suggest that next step for you should be to get Nerve conduction studies with CTS protocol to confirm the diagnosis. If CTS is confirmed, then Blood sugar and Thyroid function tests should be done, and if abnormality is detected, the associated illness should be treated as well.

The treatment of CTS is with medicines and rehabilitation measures. The standard medicines prescribed by Neurologists are various including Pregabalin, duloxetine, amitriptyline along with methylcobalamin and calcium supplements for almost 1-2 months. The symptoms will be eased over this period. At the same time, wrist splintage with cock-up splint plays a very crucial role in healing.

You should soon proceed with the investigations, as earlier the condition is treated, the better it gets.

Hope that helps. If you have any further questions,I shall be glad to have you in follow-up.

Regards
Dr.Ajay Panwar,
