What Causes Numbness And Pain On The Ankles?

default
Posted on Fri, 27 Mar 2015
Question: The side of my right foot, mainly below the ankle has been numb for about 6 days. It does not hurt, there is no noticeable swelling or discoloration, but the numbness continues. Since I don't have any back pain, etc., I don't think it's a pinched nerve situation. What might it be?

Brief Answer:
Need to observe for few days.If persists,it should be evaluated.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for being on healthcaremagic.com.
I am Dr.Ajay Panwar,a neurologist,here to answer your query.

If you would have presented to me as an outpatient,I would have told you to keep observing for few days and if this complaint persists, than it should be evaluated for the following causes:
1)Neuropathic causes:Diabetes,Vitamins deficiencies,Lumbo-sacral radiculopathy.
2)Vascular causes:Whether pulses are symmetrical in both lower limbs or not is important.Atherosclerosis, vasculitis can manifest like this.

Do you have any history of injury in that limb?Do you have any past medical history? Please tell in follow-up question.

However,at this point,I would suggest you that simply anxiety can result in this type of manifestation which can improve by itself in a few days. Please do some mental relaxation exercises and observe for about a week.Even then if it persists, then you should get evaluated for the above pathologies.A nerve conduction studies(NCS) of lower limbs should also be planned then.

Hope I have answered your query for now.If you have some follow-up questions,I shall be glad to answer else, please close the thread-rate it and write a review.Your rating will be of help to me.
