What Causes Noisy Cough With Yellow Sputum And Cold?

Question: I have had a cold for more than to weeks but now I have a noisy cough which tastes metallic when I cough up yellow sputum--is this metallic taste meaningful? Does this sound like pneumonia?

Hello and welcome,

Your symptoms of coughing up yellow sputum means you likely have some bacterial component to your infection now. And it can taste "off".

If you also have a fever, this could be pneumonia.

Or, it could be a bacterial bronchitis or a viral bronchitis with secondary bacterial infection.

I think at this point it would be good to go in to your doctor or an urgent care clinic so that your lungs can be listened to (and possibly a chest xray). If you have a fever, don't wait, go be seen today.

If you are prescribed an antibiotic (which is likely to happen if you go in to be seen), consider also taking a probiotic supplement to keep your bowels healthy. These can be taken a couple hours before or after the antibiotic.
