Posted on Thu, 3 Jul 2014
Question: Hello,

My Father has diabetes from more than 20 years and he is 61 years now. I have given him Nutrilite Salmon Omega 3 and Daily multivitamins. Is it safe to take both daily?. Nutritionist also told to have Nutrilite protein powder too. Is it safe to have all in a single day. Doctor says his nervous system functionality is reducing and I see him very weak. Please let me know if it safe. He takes insulin injection too. I am confused.

Brief Answer:
Can be safely consumed

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear. Thanks for writing on HCM.

Functional foods (protein/mineral/multivitamin supplements) can be safely consumed along with the antidiabetic medications/insulin medications and are safe. They act as preventive medicine (protects against complications).

Long standing diabetes normally results in reduced functioning of the nerves (diabetic neuropathy) which causes various disturbances like numbness and tingling sensation of the feet, burning pain, autonomic neuropathy and variety of problems. To improve the neurological function and functions of various tissues affected by diabetes I were to recommend protein and multivitamin supplements which essentially staves of deficiency.

Omega 3 in recommended doses keeps a check on blood pressures, lipids, blood glucose and protects the heart.

Hope this answers your query.Nothing to panic. He shall recover soon.

Thank you very much Doctor. My only concern was with the proteins which I heard may affect kidney especially for the diabetic patients. Any recommended intake of the protein powder?

Brief Answer:
0.8g/kg body weight/day

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear. Thanks for writing me back.

Nutrition surveys indicate that most people eat in excess of the RDA for dietary protein.According to most studies I would recommend a dietary protein intake of 0.8 g/kg body weight per day, which is the RDA especially for diabetes.

Hope this answers your query.Good luck.
