What Causes Neck Stiffness And Back Pain Radiating To Arms And Fingers?

Question: Hello Doctor,

I am Huma Riaz. I am 32 years old and had a C-section in 2013.

I was diagnosed with the presence of subtle marginal osteophytes and low vitamin D (11.2 ng/ml) in 2012. I took Vit D supplement for 8 weeks. However, I wasn't advised to continue or repeat the medication, which was unfortunate.

For a month now, I've been having stiffness of the neck, some upper back pain radiating to the arms and fingers (I had the same thing in 2012). The X-ray reports of CS and LS - AP and Lateral show all is clear (no sign of osteophytes too), which is a bit surprising to me. However, the Vit D is <8.1ng/ml. My doctor has suggested Calcirol (60000 IUs) once a week for ten weeks.

I want to know if is this enough. Is the pain only due to the vit D deficiency? Also, will I be able to get my life back to normal again? It's quite challenging managing this health condition with a baby at hand.

Thanks for your help.

Regards,
Huma

Brief Answer:
You have vitamin D deficiency

Detailed Answer:

Hi
Thanks for your query

I'm Dr Sudhir Kumar

I have gone through your query and understand your concern. I think your pain is likely to be due to vitamin D deficiency. Your doctor is right in prescription of vitamin D3 60000 IU weekly for 10 days. If you want to further continue to take then it is advisable to take after getting vitamin D levels. If it is low you should take weely dose of vitamin for nearly 10 more weeks. Then take vitamin D level and further take vitamin if it is low. This is because hyper vitaminosis is harmful and toxic. so it levels should be kept within normal limits.
Pain is likely to be due to vitamin D deficiency looking to your age. It will be nearly cured after proper supplementation of vitamin D3.

You can discuss with your doctor about it.

Hope your query get answered. If you have any clarification then I will be happy to help you.

Wishing you a good health.
Take care.
