Posted on Tue, 14 Jun 2016
Question: My 12 year old son has ear infection. Prescribed ear drops, antibiotics in pill form and sudaphed to dry up fluid today. We've used ear drops but he can't even keep water down. Giving him small sips at a time, now his neck is hurting, wondering if maybe he's strained it vomiting. He's finally sleeping but I can't help but be worried.

Brief Answer:
Explained

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome

I appreciate your concern

With the azithromycin use the ear infection should have subsided completely. The subsequent neck pain with or without dysphagia is abnormal and needs to be investigated further. Throat swab and ear discharge swab samples should be taken for culture. Cranial nerve examination especially related to 9 10th and 11th nerve should be done and treatment should proceed accordingly. Airway should be secured. If there is any evidence of angioedema or inflammation of the glottis/narrowing of respiratory tract then steroids should also be given concomitently with broad spectrum antibiotics.
