What Causes Neck Pain And Feeling Lump On The Base Of Neck?
Question: Hello,
My neck hearts around the trachea, in the front, on the sides and it feels as if I have a lump on the very base of my neck, and this happens every time I cough. The pain linger for a couple of days and goes away until I cough again. I also have pain on my left hip, which my Doctor has said it is bursitis, but it does not get better with the steroid shots. I have been a smoker for 30 years and I worry about cancer. I understand the diagnosis of pain on the neck can be difficult, and I also understand that it can be serious.
I have a high tolerance for pain and usually I do not complain, but this has been bothering me for a little over a month now and it does not feel right. What is your opinion?

Neck pain need not be cancer as cancer occurrence is very rare. Since it is hurting even to cough suggest that you are using accessory muscles for coughing. My advise is to get evaluated using chest x ray and neck scan. These will help in diagnosis and also to ruleout cancer.
Since you are telling productive cough there may be infection in lower respiratory tract or it may be due to COPD(one of the common cause).Needs evaluation by spirometry.
For now you can take anti inflammatory drug like aceclofenac or Ibuprofen. Muscle relaxant may help you for pain. Also you may require antibiotic if infection. Get back with the investigation reports for further discussion on this.
Bursitis pain will take its own time to heal. The same NSAID and muscle relaxants will help in reducing pain.
Regular 30 min exercises and diet should be maintained. These will help you.
