default
Posted on Fri, 7 Apr 2017
Question: Hi. Since last weekend I have s an experiencing terrible burning sensation in stomach and on and off nausea feeing. Occasiona feeling of wanting to pass stools. Stools are quite watery with some white bile. Not passing any blood and not been sick. No weight loss. Please could you advise what this could be? I have tried Silicol today and gsviscon and although relieves symptoms slightly it comes back.

I have had stomach problems previously but not symptoms like this. I had a colonoscopy in November 2015 - all clear apart from 1 polyp which was removed. Told to come back for another one in 5 years. Also was taking lansoprezole for gastro reflux cough up until Christmas then the cough suddenly just stopped so no longer take that medication though I do still get some heartburn. Had tests got H Pylori and celiac last year all clear and an abdominal ultra sound scan a year ago - again all clear.

Your help in the above would be appreciated and suggested treatment to resolve current problems. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Gastroenteritis most likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic for your query,
Have gone through all your details and appreciate your concern.

The infection you are suffering from is called Gastroenteritis or stomach flu.In gastroenteritis the mucosa of the intestine is severely inflamed causing symptoms like loose stools, indigestion and vomiting.
This may be virus, bacteria and parasite induced. The best way to deal with it is to eat clean food and wash hands with an antiseptic soap prior to each meal.

Tests suggested-
Ultrasound abdomen to rule out inflammation of abdomen.
Stool test for bacterial or protozoal infection
Fecal calproctin to rule out intestinal inflammation.

Most likely stomach flu is viral and is self limiting and settles down by itself in 7-10 days. However antibiotic therapy can be given in case its bacterial or protozoal. Before starting antibiotics Get a stool routine and microscopy test done.In case there is a bacterial or protozoal infection antibiotics would be started otherwise there is no need to give antibiotics.
Just follow other instructions,Usually its self limiting and will settle down.

Treatment suggested-
Start taking Fybrogel or metamucil. It increases bulk of stool and improves digestion.
Start taking a good over counter probiotic daily. It will gradually improve digestion. They are rich in good bacteria which assists digestion.
Take lots of banana,Apple and peaches.
Drink lots of fibrous juicesand keep yourself hydrated.
Take light and easily digestible food.
Antibiotic therapy could be given as per the reports of investigation.
Imodium 4 mg stat dose can be taken to stop loose stools.
Dicyclomine can be taken for spasmodic pains along with Nexium 40mg.
If vitals blood pressure and pulse is normal,You can follow above given suggestions for 2-3days before consulting doctor.
Regards and Good luck.

Thanks.
