default
Posted on Sat, 11 Apr 2015
Question: My husband had prostate surgery Feb 3rd. He has had nausea and chills ever since. Could this be caused from the anesthetic? He has been miserable ever since. Also his bladder was scraped. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
It may be due to infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi, Thanks for asking in healthcaremagic forum.
I am Dr Deepak S. Jois who's answering your query

I understand your concern. But I want to know certain details before answering your query:
a. What was the procedure (TURP /open resection)?
b. What was the anaesthetic drug used?
c. Were there any associated symptoms like fever, vomiting, blood in urine, burning sensation?
d. How long was on catheter on?
Usually complications of anesthesia are seen only after certain hours after surgery,
and some times head ache and hypotension may seen for many days after spinal anaesthesia.
But, a urinary tract infection is the most likely cause in this situation as per my knowledge and
my experience.
Hence, please provide details for further suggestions from me.
I hope I have answered your query and please let me know if I can help you further.
All the best.

(a) turp(b)don't know(c)some burning(d)6 weeks, how long should the chills last?how long should the nausea last? My husband did have a infection, they treated him with cipro but it came back they did a urine analysis and urine culture and found infection again this time he was treated with nitrofurantoin. That knocked out the infection. What do you think? Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Then its not due to anaethesia

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for getting back
I am Dr Deepak here again
I have read your details carefully. The nausea and chills are mainly due to recurrent urinary tract infection in your husband and not due to anaesthesia complications as you think.
Prostate infection takes time for complete cure and antibiotics need to be changed after culture if necessary and treatment may require few weeks.
So, please continue your doctors advise and visit him again for followup if your husband has not got relief for possible change in antibiotics after culture report.
Hope i have answered all your query. Please let me know.
All the best.
