What Causes Nasal Granuloma Mass?

default
Posted on Mon, 15 Sep 2014
Question: Could a nasal granuloma mass be caused by the work place? I read paper medical charts 40 hours a week from across the U.S. for CMS for the past 11years. Many co-workers cough or sneeze as soon as the air flow from the air conditioner or the heater starts thru the day. Several take asthma medications. I clean my desk every morning with wipes and every morning its is filthy. Yesterday -because of unstoppable nose bleed- I went to ENT doctor. He removed(painfully) a large mass from the turbine of my nose. Return this Tuesday for follow up.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. The ideal way to locate the cause of the nasal granuloma would be to get the mass removed from the nose sent for histopathological examination (HPE).

2. Chronic irritation and repeated physical trauma are common reasons for nasal granulomas. Environmental causes, dust, allergy (including fungal and viral from the air conditioning) will add to the causative factors.

3. Get the air conditioning filters cleaned regularly. HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filters are better.

4. Nasal granulomas are known to bleed spontaneously. Since it has been removed, check whether the base was cauterized well (in the operative notes). This will prevent recurrence.

5. You may follow up with the HPE report here for further treatment options.

I hope that I have answered your queries. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
