What Causes Muscle Pain While On Hydrochlorothiazide?

default
Posted on Mon, 10 Jul 2017
Question: have recently started HCTZ for blood pressure. It gives me joint and muscle pain, The VA doctor told me to take it every other day, I take 12,5 mg, I am 75. I have tried all the other popular blood pressure meds with worse side effects, mostly dizziness, I feel like I am 95 with these meds. The HCTZ is tolerable if not for the Joint pain. Pain meds have little effect!

Brief Answer:
Fluid and electrolyte imbalance

Detailed Answer:
Dear sir, I have gone through your question and I understand your concerns but unfortunately HCTZ can cause the side effects of fluid and electrolyte imbalance which can be manifested by joint and muscle pain or cramps. So I would recommend that you follow up on your sodium , chloride , potassuim and bicarbonate blood levels as long as you are using HCTZ. Also you need to follow up on your blood gases and PH.
In the meanwhile you can declofenac once daily to relieve the pain. I hope I answered your question.
