What Causes Muscle And Joint Pain After Reducing The Dosage Of Prednisone?

Question: I have been on high dosages of prednisone I have ITP ( average of 30 mg to 80 daily). Now that I am reducing my dosage of being a goal of 5mg, it have every joint and muscle pain that I can just barley take. Been taking Prednisone for 42 years. Is there a cure or something I can get to relieve the Pain, and cramps which leads to me not being able to walk over 500 feet at a time. I am a Land Surveyor and I am desperate in more ways than One.

Welcome To HCM. I am Dr Anshul Varshney. I understand your concern.
Your muscle, joint pain and leg cramps are most probably as a result of calcium deficiency that can result from use of steroids like Prednisolone for a long time.
Other common cause of such cramps and pain is increase in body weight due to steroids that causes load on your joints.
I would advice you to get your calcium and Vitamin D levels checked. If found low you would be treated with the supplements and I am very hopeful that your pain would respond.
I would also recommend you to go for thrombopoetin agonists like Eltrombopag which are very helpful in ITP as steroid sparing agents.
