What Causes Missed Period Despite Having Protected Intercourse?
Question: I am a PCOS patient and i haven't had my period in 2.5 months. 3 weeks back, i had sex for the first time but it was protected and the condom did not break. One day after that, i started a course of isotretinoin and evening primrose oil and vitakind zit, all these for acne problems. I have still not had my period and i am worried. i am showing no signs of pregnancy as such and i took a pregnancy test yesterday (3 weeks after sex) and it was negative. should i be worried? should i get a blood test done? what symptoms should i expect? i don't feel nauseous or anything.

Dear since it was protected sex pregnancy test is negative and PCOS is one of the causes of infertility,so there could be less chance of having positive pregnancy.
Though you may confirm it by ultrasound abdomen to clear any doubt.
Pregnancy testing should idealy be done from the day your period would have been due.But as you have irregular menses date and no periods for 2 and half months ,so pregnancy test ( urine test) could give false positive or false negative result.So ultrasound pelvis and abdomen would give accurate result else you may repeat the urine test after few days.
The symptoms and signs of pregnancy can be missed period,higher basal body temprature ,morning sickness ,breast changes like soreness and lumpy and increased cervical mucus etc But these symptoms can be variable in different females.

Thank you doctor. Is it better to get a blood test done or an ultrasound? And i have been getting a little white discharge which i do usually also but slightly more recently. could the tablets i am taking be causing that? I am very worried.

Okay doctor. Thank you very much. I will get my ultrasound done tomorrow itself. Is it too early to even get my ultrasound or it will surely help? also, how safe is it to have sex with only a condom? do i need to take a pill? My boyfriend did not ejaculate inside me but i don't want to take any risk. What could be causing the white discharge?

Hi again.Dear I can understand your concern.Ultrasound can show early changes in uterus like thickening of uterine wall,implanted zygote (if there is pregnancy) etc .Using condom is a safe method but sometime can torn up ,so second precaution can be taken with emergency oral contraceptive pill if condom is torn.But repeated emergency pills should be avoided ,as it can cause hormonal disbalance.White discharge could be cervical normal discharge.
