What Causes Mild Pain Under Left Front Rib Cage?

Posted on Mon, 17 Aug 2015
Question: Hi, I have 3 things going on right now and I'm beginning to wonder if they are related. I do not have a general physician (he retired last year). I would appreciate any help you can provide. Thank you!

1. I've been having moderate to severe pressure with mild to moderate pain under my left front rib. It feels like a baby's foot is stuck up there (I've had 3 babies) :). It seems to get worse when I eat protein. I primarily eat a Paleo diet. This has lasted about one week.

2. I had a back injury 4 months ago. It progressively got worse. I was diagnosed with "slipped disk" without an MRI due to the radiating pain down both legs into my feet. After 2 months of PT, the radiating pain was getting better and less frequent, but I still have localized pain. I am restricted to only necessary activity and walking. I'm concerned that the healing process isn't going faster.

3. Today, I noticed a dark spot on my thumb. I have darker olive skin and the spot is dark brown. This spot is new. It's flat and painless. No itching.

After spending some time online learning about the possible causes of pain/pressure under ribs, I'm beginning to wonder if the 3 (or at least #1 and 3) are related. I have a new patient appointment scheduled with a GP but they couldn't get me in for about one month. I just want to know if I should be concerned or not. Thank you!

Brief Answer:
mutiple problems and there possible management plan

Detailed Answer:
Hi!

Welcome to health care magic!

I am Dr. Saddiq Ul Abidin. I have read your problem in detail and will try to help you in best way possible.

First of all, thanks for sharing the history with such details nicely put together, though it would have been more appreciable if you had shared the picture of lesion as you described in number 3.

Based on his information, I would rather start from hopeful ones first, as you have explained in problem 2. The recovery time, as you mentioned is quite satisfactory and you are among those lucky few, in which the recovery is spontaneous without needing any surgical intervention. It is quite encouraging. Keep up the good work and precautions. Avoid lifting heavy weights or strenuous exercises in the recovery period. The settlement of referred pains is indeed a great sign, so good luck with that.

Now coming to problem number 1, based on your explanation of syptoms, it appears to be muscular strain, which is common and can be due to any inappropriate set I'd movement or strain and recovers spontaneously, however some analgesics and muscle relaxants like tizindine may help. For further reassurance you can have a chest Xray. The association with protien meals raises few eye brows regarding its gastric origin and can be a coincidence. You can further look for uric acid levels to find any association between proteins and pains but in your case it is a rare possibility. Any relation to the problem number 3 is less likely. First if problem number 3 has to be assessed at its own. It would be more appreciable if we can know size or appearance of that spot. You can share picture as well.

Hope this has answered your query, if you have any more questions, feel free to ask. kindly rate me before closing, and leave your feedback if possible.

Regards,
Dr. Saddiq Ul abidin.
