Posted on Wed, 18 Feb 2015
Question: the upper right side of my thyroid cartilage is slightly large than the other and present mild pain that comes and goes. I went to ENT and after looking down my throat, he said everything looked normal. I was diagnosed with an inflammation of the thyroid cartilage. Is this common and what, if any, follow up is recommended?

Brief Answer:
Inflammation of thyroid gland is common than thyroid cartilage .

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for the query.

I have read your query and understand your concern.

To help you better, kindly upload pictures of your thyroid cartilage from both side & mid-line.

To conform inflammation of the thyroid cartilage or thyroid gland ultrasonography of neck will be helpful. It will also rule out other thyroid disorders.

Inflammation of thyroid gland is more common than thyroid cartilage.
If I were your treating Doctor for this case, I would advice you
continue NASID for pain and inflammation &
Investigation like ultrasonography of neck to conform inflammation of thyroid.

If inflammation present, next step will be thyroid profile test. Follow up needed every 3 month.

Hope it is helpful to you . If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.
Regards.

Thanks for the reply, Dr. Karade.

I have uploaded the pictures to my profile/dashboard as requested. This was the only place that I could find that would allow me to upload any type of file.

Understanding the anatomy of the throat, only on an elementary level, can thyroid disorders cause pain in the thyroid cartilage? My primary care and ENT checked my thyroid, although without ultrasound or xray, and said it appeared to be fine.

I mentioned a slighted size variance in the right side of the thyroid cartilage but it is mainly noticed my feeling.

One other thing that may or may not be linked is that I have battled with severe GERD over the past years. Not knowing if this is related, I thought this may or may not help with your consult.

Thanks,
