What Causes Mild Consistent Knee Pain Inspite Of Joining Gym?

default
Posted on Tue, 1 Apr 2014
Question: Hi Doctor, My sister had joined a gym and its been 2 months since she is regular to the cardio exercises. She runs for 15 mins @ 7.5kmph, does cycling for 15 mins and pedalling (or EFX, we call it) for another 15 mins. Apart from this, she does some stretching exercises which anyways is not related to knee . She has a mild consistent knee pain (in both the Legs) since she joined. It doesn't hurt while walking but a little pain while bending the knee. We gave it a time till now to settle but the pain though mild, is consistent. She is a healthy individual and did not have this pain earlier before joining gym. The exercises doesn't seem to be intensive and should not cause any effects. Any suggestions or advice on this will be of great help for us. Thanks, XXXXX Sister's Name: XXXXXXX

Brief Answer: Nutrition Joint supplement and vitamin D will help Detailed Answer: Hi Myself Dr. Chugh, Orthopaedic surgeon. I have gone through your query, the whole problem started after joining the gym. One should have gradually increased the exercise duration at a weekly interval, to give time to the body to adjust. For now, my advice would be take a break from gym of 5-7 days, take diet rich in calcium and vitamin D (daily requirement is 1000 unit of vitamin D along with 1000 mg of calcium),present in milk and milk products, along with giucosamine and chondroitin sulphate(joint supplement). Painkiller like ibuprofen on as and when required basis. Ice fomentation, for calf muscle immediately after the exercises will also help. Today, we have capsule/powder of vitamin D, which can be given in weekly dose. Since, painkiller and vitamin D are prescription drugs, please contact your local doctor for that. I hope she will improve in a few weeks time. Take care and I shall be glad to reply any further query. Wishing her good health. Regards
