Question: I am a 67 year old male in relatively good health and have been noticing a metallic taste in my mouth when eating or drinking. I am taking several medications daily since December 2014: lisinopril, plavix, metoprolol, low dose aspirin, lipitor all of which were prescribed by a cardiologist after angioplasty.

ello,

Welcome to Health Care Magic.

Thanks for writing.

I am Dr.Muhammad Ahmad. I have read your question completely, i understand your concern and will try to help you in best way possible.

Bad metallic taste is because of an upset stomach. This is specially common in cardiac patients who are taking aspirin, aspirin has many benefits for the heart but it does cause stomach upset and this is probably its most common side effect.

You need to do a few simple things to get rid of this metallic taste. It may take a week or so.

1) Avoid coffee , tea..caffeine, fizzy drinks, Smoking , alcohol (what ever is relevant)

2) Avoid Junk.
3) Eat small multiple meals instead of 2..3 big ones.
4) Use more fibre in your food ,you can take fibre supplements as well.
5) Don't eat before you sleep keep a gap of an hour atleast.
6) Regular physical activity is much needed.
7) I would recommend you to use syrup Gaviscon to protect your stomach from side effects of aspirin.

Try to follow these suggestions for 5..6 days if this doesnt work then you will have to visit your doctor and discuss with him prescription meds like Lansoprazole or pentoprzaole they are really good in protecting stomach from increased acid causing metallic taste I do recommend them to my patients.

I would like to mention in the end that this is not a matter if big concern this is really common and this can be controlled just need a couple of weeks and it's gone. Hopefullt it will happen without you needing to visit your doctor.

I hope this answered your question, a
if you have more please feel free to ask.

I don't think I have any stomach upset. Is it possible to have an upset stomach and not notice any symptom?

Brief Answer:
Here are some other causes

Detailed Answer:
hellp thanks for writing back,

yes stomach upset can represent as just a metallic taste in mouth.there are some reasons other than stomach issues.

Poor oral hygiene – If you don’t brush and floss regularly, the result can be teeth and gum problems such as gingivitis, periodontitis and tooth infection. These infections can be cleared up with a prescription from your dentist. The metal taste typically goes away after the infection is gone.

Prescription drugs – These medicines include antibiotics such as tetracycline; the gout medicine allopurinol; lithium, which is used to treat certain psychiatric conditions; and some cardiac medications. Your body absorbs the medicine and it comes out in the saliva. Also, medicines that can cause a dry mouth, such as antidepressants, can be a culprit. These can affect your taste because they close your taste buds.

Over-the-counter vitamins or medicines – Multivitamins with heavy metals (such as copper, zinc or chromium) or cold remedies (such as zinc lozenges) can cause a metallic taste. So can prenatal vitamins, and iron or calcium supplements. Usually the taste will go away as your body processes the vitamins or medicine. If not, check your dosage and make sure you are not taking too much.

Infections – Upper respiratory infections, colds and sinusitis change your sense of taste. This is temporary and usually ends when the infection does.

Chemical exposures – If you are exposed to mercury or lead, inhaling high levels of these substances often can produce a metallic taste.

Do you think anything among this can stand out as a cause in your case?

the only item in your list above that could apply is within the "Prescription Drug" paragraph: cardiac medications (which I listed in the original first description of the problem).
