Question: Hi, I have a lump about the size of a 50p on the back of my ankle. It hurts when I walk. I have had it for about 2 months. I don't remember having any sort of accident. Do you know what it could be?

Brief Answer:
Can be any of the causes mentioned below

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in.

I have read through your query in detail.
A lumps behind the ankle is usually not a seriouus concern. It can be due to many conditions, including infections, inflammation, tumors and injury. Most ankle lumps are due to trauma but since you do not report any traumatic event, it is less likely.

It can be a ganglion cyst, which is a fluid containing, sac like structure that forms below the skin and are felt as a firm swelling. Less commonly, benign and malignant lumps of the skin and soft tissues can cause lumps in the ankle.

Rarely, should it be painful to touch then infection and inflammation might be considered.

Please consult your doctor to make a confirmatory diagnosis.

Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
Dr.Vivek
