What Causes Lower Abdominal Pain After Intercourse?

default
Posted on Thu, 12 Feb 2015
Question: I am 19 years old. And I recently became sexually active. I have only had sexual intercourse about 6 times and I have noticed my lower abdomen hurts during and after sex every time.Yesterday, I had my first gynecology visit and I felt the same sensation after the doctor checked me. Even today I still feel the pain. It's not an unbearable pain. I would describe it as slight cramping. I am no where near getting my period. So my question is, is this normal?

Brief Answer:
Yes, it is normal, due to stimulation of the cervix.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
Yes it is quite normal.
You are just recently active sexually.
The sensation that you feel is due to the stimulation of the cervix.
It is not an incapacitating pain as such but a mild sensation of discomfort due to cervical stimulation.
WHen your gynecologist examines you internally, the same sensation is experienced as the cervix is touched manually.
It should pass off in some time as you get accustomed to regular sexual activity.
MEanwhile it would help if the sex is gentle initially and deep pelvic thrusting is avoided.
Drink lots of water and clean yourself after every episode of sexual intercourse.
DO not use any special soaps, gels, douches, cleansers to clean, just plain lukewarm water is enough to cleanse the vagina.
Flush yourself thoroughly with water after sex.
Make sure you and your partner are thoroughly screened for STDs.
All the best
