Question: Hi, my 4 year old son has a platelet count of 119, what could that mean?

Brief Answer:
probably nothing serious

Detailed Answer:
While it is true that a normal platelet count is over 150K, there are many reasons for an occasional low platelet count. It could be that the platelets were clumped and so the machine misread the number that were present. If he has only had one low reading then I would just repeat it. Hopefully it was just a one time thing and will be normal next time.
It could just be a variation of normal. I have had several patients with platelet counts around 100K that never really go up or down much and never have problems.
What is important to watch is the trend. If it is trending downward then that is a concern.
Platelets can become low because there is a problem with making platelets, with destruction of platelets and with sequestration of platelets in the spleen.
Platelets help with blood clotting and we do not see concern about bleeding in patients until the platelet count goes below 20K.
If your son is having a decline in the platelet count then seeing a hematologist would be the specialist for him to see.

Hi, we have got some more results back today. My son's ferritin is 16 and his creatinine is low. What could this mean?

Brief Answer:
no problems with these values

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for your follow up. The ferritin is normal and we really only worry about creatinine if it is high. It is very common for your people to have a low creatinine.
