What Causes Low Heart Rate While Treating Carotid Artery Disease?
Question: I have Carotid artery stenosis and recently started peritoneal dialysis for long standing CKD (25yrs) associated with 47 years of type 1 Diabetes - which has taken too much fluid off too much fluid. I am also on High BP meds - Prazosin 5mg x3 times a day + Metoprolol 75mg x2 times a day and 10 days ago I was put back on Irbesartan 75mg to replace a 4th Prazosin at lunch time. The Home Dialysis tear have a plan in place to reduce the strength of my bags, my fill volume and if needbe the number of cycles.
My only question is could the resultant low heart rate - 46 or 47 beats per minute and the BP swining from 108/46 through to 235/79 (the reason for all the BP meds and I have my Dr's OK to not take any dose if my BP is under125/58 as my Kidney specalist dors not want it above 130ies/60s- cause me to hear a whooshing sound in my earsand slight tingling in my head? As our emergency Dr could not say as he was not familiar with the symptoms

I have gone very carefully through the mentioned details and understand your concerns. The low heart rate is due to the effect of Metoprolol which is a beta blocker. Unless you have definite symptoms, you need not worry about the low heart rate.
The upper limit of the fluctuation of BP worries me. It is unacceptable and if it frequently occurs it either indicates that your medication is irregular or that you need to talk to your doctor about change of medication. You should not skip doses even if the BP is on the lower side. Rather, if it frequently occurs, you can talk to your treating physician about lowering of the doses.

My actual question does not appear on the page with your answer it about a whooshing sound in my ears and tingling in my head and couldthat be related to the Carotid Stenosis (45% in the left 62% in the right) when the HR is under 50 because because that is when these two things happen and the Dr I saw was not sure and I won,t be able to see any of my Drs or Specalists until Monday and this information would save me further trips to emergency if that is what it is connected to if not the may need further investigation.

I am sorry for having missed the point that you wished to know. I would affirm the the whooshing sound as well as the tingling in your head are likely to be related to your carotid stenosis. I am not sure if it has any association with appearance when you have a low heart rate.
A carotid doppler will clarify the level of stenosis and would be able to indicate if ay intervention is required.

Thankyou for confirming what I believed to be the case now I know that they are a part of the stenosis picture I will learn a way to cope with then as I do with all my other health concerns. If they become worse or more frequent I will get a referral for a vascular Specalist from my GP. Once again thanks for your prompt reply -I appologise for not opening it before this but we had my granddaughters 4th birthday today so we went to Chapel as an extended family and then I spent the day at my Son + Daughter-in-law's house so only opened the computer when I got home.
