What Causes Low Energy Levels After Gastric Bypass Surgery?

default
Posted on Mon, 16 Jun 2014
Question: Have had low energy levels for six months. Have had poor absorbsion due to gastric bypass surgery 2007, but lately worse. Had double hernia repair March for gastric bypass causeed double hernia. Have lumps on thyroid, both sides, some considered large, but many followup needle biopsies negative for cancer. This last six months (after a big move, I add) I've had much lower energy levels, and when I get an energetic day like my "old self" it is gone the next day. I've had the flu mid April followed by lingering cough/cold I can't shake. Also had iron infusion in early April (iron reserves very low) and iron levels low then now high. Also 2x B12 shots. I just can't seem to pick up, and wonder if something else should be looked at. I am 65 and still overweight, though not as obese as before.

Brief Answer:
Endocrine

Detailed Answer:
I am sorry to learn about your symptoms.

May I please know if you have has your vitamin D levels checked ? If not I strongly suggest a blood test for 25 hydroxy vitamin D levels because deficiency of this vitamin is fairly common after gastric bypass surgery. Low levels can produce a variety of symptoms.

Further I would like to know if your TSH has been looked at. TSH as you may know is a blood test for thyroid function. Individuals who have abnormal thyroid function report symptoms similar to yours.

I would finally also suggest a CBC (complete blood count) and a CMP (comprehensive metabolic profile) too.

Please let me know the details for the above tests so that I am better able to help you.
