What Causes Low Blood Pressure?

default
Posted on Tue, 5 May 2015
Question: Hello, just curious about a recent blood pressure reading. Mine is always on the low side but today it was 102/50. My husband is a little worried about that. I'm 49, female, 15kg overweight but no other issues really, healthwise. Is this blood pressure reading a concern? We used an omron monitor which my husband uses for his AF.

Brief Answer:
It looks like nothing to worry about.

Detailed Answer:

Hello!

Thank you for asking on HCM!

Regarding your concern, I would explain that your current blood pressure reading, does not represent any significant problem to concern about, as long as you are not experiencing unpleasant symptoms, such as tiredness, dizziness, headache, etc.

Have you ever experienced any associated disturbances??

As long as you are not suffering from such disorders, like heart failure with low LV EF, diarrhea, excessive vomiting, prescription of diuretics, dehydration, being on antihypertensive therapy, prior history or orthostatic hypotension or presyncope, there is nothing to worry about.

At that point, you just need to keep monitoring your blood pressure frequently, right down respective values and discuss with your doctor (GP or internist) about adequacy of your BP values.

Remember that such BP values, in the absence of any triggering diseases (as the above mentioned), and overt associated symptoms, doesn't imply any risks on your health.

You are advice to monitor your BP, but be cautious to use an appropriate device. Those digital equipments are very practical, but lack sufficient accuracy, especially when calibration is run off (hard to realize on a digital device), or when battery is near end of life.

Hope to have been helpful to you.

Feel free to ask me whenever you need. Greetings! Dr. Iliri
