What Causes Low HB And High Ferritin Level?

default
Posted on Mon, 26 May 2014
Question: a month ago I tested blood.
It came out that my HB is 8.4 (normal lab values here are 8.5 - 11)
My ferritin was 324 (normal lab values here are XXXXXXX 230)
There are 2 senarios for the high ferritin, or its because I am Mediterranean, or its because a possible infection that time as I had a cold.
My ferritin was measured 4 years ago and it was 270 (so it was high as well but at that time I was consuming alcohol each weekend).

the low HB has 2 senarios as well. Or it's becasue I sport 5 days a week and I was eating less iron rich food. So the dieet might have caused my light anemia. In 2 months I will test my blood again.

But this all is not my concern. The reason why I contact you is, since 3 weeks now I am trying to eat enough iron through the food. Eating liver, meet, eggs, vegetables, vitamin C etc..

But I also was drinking now 2-3 weeks something called Roosviacee Ferro which contains per eat spoon 5 mg iron and it's sold in Supermarkets here. I was mixing it with water and was drinking it twice a day. I finished about a liter of it in 3 weeks.

This seems to be a high volume of iron. Probably I was drinking double or tripple of what is allowed which made my stool also dark and hard . so now I will stop drinking this.

So now I am a little worried by damages I could have caused to my liver? Or something else? Is this a big concern makes me have to go to the doctor as soon as possible or this will resolve itself? Note, I stopped using it now.

By the way, for the anemia and slight high ferritin I am already consulting a doctor and he will followup this with me on regular basis.

this drink contains about 5mg iron each spoon. I think the total iron I was taking was about 30 mg a day sa average that for 2 weeks..

I dont feel anything by the way. I feel ok. One time bowel movement a day or even 2.

this drink contains ferrogluconate and vitamins

One more information. I am 75 kg and 173 cm

I was now reading the suplments. It says that this drink contains 100 mg iron per 100 ml. so I have had 1000 mg iron in 17 days !!!

I also read on net that the iron in this drink is not like the one in medicines . Even if I had the whole bottle in once.. But I'm wondering how my body will get rid of this iron?

Brief Answer:
Iron mania

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I do not think you are in a worrisome situation. I read through your Hb and Serum ferritin levels, they are not too concerning to be worried. Ferritin raises rapidly in many other conditions. So it is not the right parameter to look at and worry about.

Since you are folowing up with your doctor, please continue to do it. There needs no intervention or medication at this time. The drink is not dangerous and as said on the internet it behaves differently. It would not accumulate iron in the body and readily passes it off.

All I suggest now is not to worry, follow up with your doctor. The extra iron you seem to have taken would have been passed out by stool by now. Your wellness also suggests that you are not running any disease.

Hope this assures you.
