What Causes Loss Of Consciousness While On Epilex Chrono?

default
Posted on Thu, 28 Jan 2016
Question: Hello !
I'm a seizure patient and using Epilex chrono right now.
Some times (while playing Badminton, Working etc.,)
I'm becoming unresponsive for few minutes(2 minutes) and being normal after that span.
Please advise me, is this happening because of my physical stress while playing and mental stress while working?
Why is this happening for me ?
I'm worried here ! Please advise me with Do's and Dont's list of activities, so I will follow them to prevent happening this.

Hello Dear Dr. XXXXXXX !

Please find my answers below to your queries:

1) Is this the only type of seizure you are having where you go unresponsive for a few minutes?Do you sometimes have seizures with jerky movements of limbs, tongue bite and frothing from the mouth?
Ans) I do suffer with jerky seizures too, but rare.Might be once in an year till 2014.But in the year 2105 it was on Quarterly basis, last 4 months it attacked for 3 time in my sleep and controlled with in 5 minutes.
But this unresponsive state kind of seizures is being repeated very frequently.
every consecutive day (this is happening once in a day in the morning and being repeated during evening on the same day). I could not identify this by myself, only when my friends notice during my play time.

2)Have you got a MRI Brain done?

Yes, recently I have took MRI scan last week and doctor said everything is all right !

3)Are the seizures control on Epilex chrono?Has the frequency of seizures decreased?
Im using the new course from last 2 months(epilex chrono 200 till week and from today I started taking epilex chrono 300 mg upon doctors advise).
So I think, I cant come to a conclusion right now, whether the jerky seizures frequency is decreased or not.
I complained to to doctor about the unresponsiveness kind seizure, That's why I believe he advised high dosage 300 mg now.

Brief Answer:
Was loss of consciousness associated with jerky seizures?

Detailed Answer:
Hi xxxxxxxxx,
Thanks for being in follow-up and providing further details.

I would like to know whether jerky seizures you had were associated with loss of consciousness or not?
Actually jerky seizures can be of 2 types-
1)Generalized tonic clonic seizures: jerky movements of extremities followed by tonic contraction, neck turning, frothing from mouth, tongue bite and loss of consciousness.
2)Myoclonic jerks-These are just rapid jerks not associated with loss of consciousness.Neck turning, frothing, tongue bite, uprolling of eyeballs are not associated.

I am interested in knowing that out of the above, which type of seizures you tend to have or both of them? Are you diagnosed as 'Juvenile myoclonic epilepsy'?

Hello DR. XXXXXXX

I'm with type one:Generalized tonic clonic seizures, as I go unconscious when it was with jerks. I checked doctors note as the same: Generalized tonic clonic seizures.

And as I said you , I go numb-unresponsive-paused state for few minutes(2-3 minutes) but I don't go unconscious during this time. I will be back normal with in 2-3 minutes. Is this Myoclonic type ? but I don't get and jerks during this time. Only that numbness for some time.

Please let me know, if you have any questions to me to analyse more.

Thank you,
Venki

Brief Answer:
EEG/Continue Epilex chrono.

Detailed Answer:
Hi xxxxxxxxxxx,
Thanks for being in follow-up and providing further details.

These new type of seizures 'numb-unresponsive-paused state' now appear to be either absence or complex partial seizures. These are not myoclonic. I would suggest you to continue Epilex chrono in the advised dosage and observe for the response.

Further,I would suggest you to get an EEG and a MRI with epilepsy protocol,to evaluate for the etiology.

Hope that I have answered your query. If you have some further questions,I shall be glad to have you in follow-up else please close the thread, rate it and write a review.
