Brief Answer: Refer below Detailed Answer: Hi, Thanks for consulting HealthcareMagic! Most commonly, this kind of problem of loose stools in kids of 6 months age is caused by viral infection. Most common organism is rotavirus. So, Augmentin which is used for bacterial infection may not act properly. However, if it is due to viral infection, the treatment is symptomatic with iv fluid support. Loose stools since 3 days can lead to electrolyte imbalance and dehydration. I suggest that she needs intravenous fluid support in hospital as early as possible Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if you have have any clarifications. Hi doctor. She had a throat infection and therefore was put on Augmentin. While on Augmentin, she had loose stools and paed said it should get better when she's off the medicine. She has recovered from the infection and has been off Augmentin for three days already. Stool is still loose. How long before it will become normal again? Should I give her Smecta too? Thank you.

Brief Answer: Refer below Detailed Answer: Hi, If the loose stools would have been due to Augmentin, by this time she should have improved. So, alternative causes like viral infection as discussed in previous reply should be considered. Whatever, the cause may be she needs fluid support as there would be danger of dehydration. Giving Smecta is not very important now than to get fluid support. Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if you have have any clarifications.
