What Causes Localized Scalp Tenderness?

default
Posted on Mon, 14 Dec 2015
Question: Week ago i started to feel like my hair (around 2 inch area) on left side towards top of my head hurting slightly. (you know how you sleep on your hair for a while and it hurts next morning? but then over coming days it's gotten worst where it hurts even more. It hasn't got worst or better last 3 days. I read online common causes could be infection or hitting head; but i have checked; no redness or bump and haven't hit my head anywhere. I could actually massage it for a some moments and it actually feels better ; and then few minutes later it's back to same level.

Brief Answer:
Possible unnoticed hair traction

Detailed Answer:
Hello, Sir.

I can certainly understand your concerns.

I apologize for the delayed response owing to my work schedule.

I have worked through your query and attached images/reports in detail.

This should not be a major problem.

Initially lets presume that it could be a localized tenderness due to unnoticed hair traction.

A trial of short courses of analgesic should help.

I recommend oral pills of Ibuprofen for 3 to 5 days for the same to my patients.

Observe for 5 days and update me with the outcome.

Please check with your physician if he shares my view and if can prescribe the medication(s)to you.

Post your further queries if any.
Thank you.

Hi. thanks for responding.
Actually I'm sure this is not a hair traction, so it's not that.
I can't take ibuprofen (since i have crohn's) so I take a little bit of tylenol. it didn't help a lot. I have applied a hot towel in the area a few times a day last couple days.
That seems to helped a little (it's not gotten worst and maybe 10-15% better from couple days ago)

I also don't think this is insect bite or skin condition as I've checked the scalp and had someone inspect with flashlight; no bumps, or anything. (and I never bumped my head anyhwere) . let me know what you think.

p.s. Also checked and have no fever and blood pressure is normal 120/80.

Brief Answer:
Possible localized hyperalgesia.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, Sir.

I can understand your concerns.

I apologize for the delayed response owning to my work schedule.

As per your revised clinical history, the possibility of localized hyperalgesia secondary to neuralgia has to be suspected.

Before proceeding for further investigations, it is important to have a trial of oral pills of pregabalin and amitryptalline for 1 to 2 weeks .These drugs together are know to reduce the nerve hyperalgesia.

Please check with your physician if he shares my view and if can prescribe them to you.

Post your further queries if any.
Thank you.
