What Causes Lightheadedness And Rapid Pulse Rate While On Ceclor?
Question: I started having symptoms of a UTI Monday night. I had them regularly for years in my 20s so I know what they feel like. I have no insurance at the moment because I lost my job so I am really worried about money for tests and meds. My mother (who used to be a nurse) had left a course of Ceclor CD at my house. I read about it and saw it was used for UTIs. I called my pharmacy and asked about allergy info, knowing I'm allergic to amoxicillin and all cyclines, and they said probably ok. BUT I didn't verify the dosage... They're 500mg tablets and I've taken them at 12 hr intervals but for about an hour after each dose I feel very strange. Light headed, dizzy, flushed, and my heart races for a few minutes. I read more and discovered the 500mg tablets are really for more serious infections or respiratory infections. So now I'm worried I'm taking too strong a dose. The UTI symptoms were relieved within a few hours after the first dose. I took two more doses in addition so far. I'm wondering if I can or should stop taking the tablets. Or will the UTI rebound? Am I creating a resistance problem with the high dose? Thanks for your advice.

Since you are allergic to amoxicillin than there are chances of allergic reaction to cefaclor but less likely, as you have been taking it since last 36 hours so continue with it.
Here I would like to know further details to guide you better
Are you having burning sensation in urine or having increased frequency of urination?
Have you been tested for UTI?
Lightheadedness, dizziness and fast heart rates might be related to side effects of cefaclor, so you need not to worry
you can modify the doses like 250 to 500 mg thrice daily according to your weight
Since you have taken 3 doses already so I would advise you to continue with it and complete the course for 7 to10 days
If you don't complete the course of antibiotics than there are chances of rebound or recurrent UTI.
No issue of resistance when you have already relieved of the symptoms of UTI, however I would advise you to complete the course of cefaclor.
If these side effects goes beyond tolerance than I would advise you to switch over to another antibiotics like Norflaxacin or nitrofurantoin.
Have plenty of fluids and maintain good hydration.

Thank you Dr. Hudda for your reply. I am relieved to know that the 500mg dose is still within a normal range dosage for a UTI. I would trade the pills for 250 mg tablets if I could but it not possible due to my financial situation at the moment. I will continue taking the 500mg tablets. The instructions say not to break the tablets so I won't do that.
I was not tested for UTI but as I say, I am familiar with the symptoms. This time the symptoms I felt were: pain in the pelvic region, severe burning at urination, frequency, and urgency. I did not see blood in the urine. I only felt the symptoms for a few hours before I took the Ceclor CD so hopefully it had not become a severe infection. The other reason I am certain that I had a UTI is that after just one dose of the Ceclor CD, all of the symptoms were significantly relieved and are basically gone at this point.
