What Causes Light Redness In Vaginal Discharge?

default
Posted on Mon, 17 Nov 2014
Question: I found some unusual light redness in my vaginal discharge when I went to the bathroom earlier? I'm not even sure it was blood. What could the cause be? It's not time for my period yet. I've heard anxiety could be a cause? If this is true I have an anxiety disorder and I have been dealing with a lot of anxiety this past week. I also take 100mg of zoloft and I just started taking 100mg the beginning of this week.

Brief Answer:
It can be due to anxiety or side effect of drug.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for writing to us about it.

Yes, anxiety and zoloft can change your menstrual cycle pattern and it may cause intermenstrual bleeding or this type of discharge.

The precise cause is unknown, but it occurs due to the hormonal imbalance caused by anxiety and antidepressant drugs.

Infection is also a reason of your problem.

Are you having any itching and odor associated with discharge?

Hope it is useful, feel free to ask more.

Good luck.

I do not having any itching or odor associated with it. I don't think it's spotting because I've never spotted before and it only seemed to be in the discharge. It was almost redish orangish in fact. I was on 50mg zoloft before but I didn't have this, could the increase of the dose cause this? I also have never experienced this with my anxiety before but my eyelid has started twitching from what I think is due to anxiety and that has never happened before either.

Brief Answer:
it may be due to the drug...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

If there is no itching or odour, then possibilities of infection are very rare. It could be traces of blood as you suspected; as long as the symptoms resolve and doesn't recur nothing to be concerned.

Zoloft does not commonly cause such a discharge. However you can discuss about this possibility with your treating doctor. He/she may regulate the dose and see if it improves.

Hopefully it is clear now.

Good day.

When I woke up this morning I did find a very very light brownish/maybe red stain in my underwear. This could either be spotting or discharge. When I wiped there wasn't any traces of blood and it hasn't come back since. A few times when I wiped last night from using the restroom I saw an orange speck that might be left over from the orangish/red discharge I had, but after using the restroom this morning where I saw the stains in my underwear it also hasn't showed up since. Not sure what this is. Also, my last period was on October 6-12. I heard women can spot in between periods but I have never spotted before. Could the increase dose in my medication be the cause of all this? I didn't have any of these symptoms when I was on 50mg. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Yes, it can be due to increase dose of medication.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Nice to hear from you again.

Your symptoms are suggestive of intermenstrual bleeding due to side effect of the drug.

So please consult your treating physician for your dose regulation.

Hope it is clear now, feel free to discuss more.

Good luck.
