Question: Hello! I am in the process of waiting for dr to return my call. I've had pain since March in my lfoot leg thigh and back. I have been going to a chiropractor for 3 months. Sciatica in both legs. Recently had an MRI WHICH SHOWS 5 herniated disc and nerve impingements. Am trying to get a pain dr ans see a surgeon, in case that is needed. I have had back surgery for one extrudiated disc about 4-5 years ago. I have a new symptom...I get up from a chair and as I walk my legs and buttocks fell like rubber and I have to grab hold of something because my head gets dizzy and I have fallen at times. I have a chronic CANCER...CML, WHICH IS IN CHECK, good labs a few weeks ago. I also have a bad knee, which I've had a minis us type surgery, many injections since, no better, worse, and the dr suggested knee replacement. I am walking with difficulty and a lot of pain... Question...what should I take care of first...do you think I will need back surgery...will I have nerve damage? I also am having problems with not making it to the bathroom to urinate and some diarrhea. Thanks, XXXX

I have 5 herniated disc with nerve impingements.

Have been going to chiropractor since April. About 2.5 months...symptoms worse..treated for sciatica in both limbs..worse now...had MRI... Continuing treatment. Referred to pain specialist and surgeon...cannot see surgeon til July 31. No response from pain dr yet. I also have CML....oncologist ordered lab...it is good for CML. ALSO HAVE A BAD KNEE...had surgery 2011...following with injections, as pain returned. It was suggested I have knee replacement...have not gone back yet for this. I was given 3 days of hydro codeine and ibuprophene . With no refills by the chiro dr's MD. SHE DID NOT WANT TO DISPENSE ANY DRUGS.....WASN't even sure what to give me, and sent me with an incorrect dosage script. I lack confidence in her. I am in pain and need something....she tried 2rounds of prednisone and gave me ultrum. I would like to know what issue to take care of first...how to deal with pain...I seem to be getting worse...when I stand and start to walk, sometimes I get this weird feeling in my legs and buttocks...I grab hold of nearest thing to hold me up...have fallen a couple of times...this is not normal.

Brief Answer:
Microdiscectomy required

Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

Thanks for the query.

I have read your query and understood your problem.

The fact that you have multiple level disc prolapse, you are experiencing symptoms of large area muscle spasm and also possibly numbness. This occurs because the nerves travelling to your legs from the lower back are being compressed and this irritates the muscles they supply.

The knee needs to be evaluated with an MRI to look for internal derangement by your Surgeon. It is wise to get your back treated first because your are experiencing quite severe symptoms of compression like those of sciatica, lower limb make weakness and numbness.

Your CML must be reviewed and treatment maintained well.

It would be wise to use crutches or a walking stuck to move around and avoid stumbling. Your Doctor may prescribe muscle relaxant to relieve you of the spasm. Also you can apply heat in the form of hot water bottle over these painful regions to get relief of the muscle spasm.

Usually surgery like microdiscectomy may be needed to remove the severe disc bulges that are compressing the nerves. This will give your relief from the symptoms. Kindly consult with your Doctor about that.

I hope I have answered your query.

I will be available to answer your follow up queries.

Thanking you.

Brief Answer:
Soft, weak bones

Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

Thanks for the query.

Vitamin D levels in the blood will show how strong your bones are. Vitamin D deficiency leads to a Calcium deficiency which makes bones softer and weaker. This can lead to bone pain, weakness and other multiple symptoms.

Vitamin D levels have been linked to disc prolapses between softened and weakened vertebrae and also a cause of bone pain which can be attributed to the knee pain. This is why your Doctor wants to know your Vitamin D level.

I hope I have answered your query.
