default
Posted on Wed, 21 May 2014
Question: I was up most of the evening with severe pain in my lower left area of my stomach? i was trying to look to see if it was my appendix, or liver what it may have been. It started at 9 pm, i tried heating pads, laying in several different positions to try to eleviate the discomfort. a hot bath, i thought perhaps it was gas, which on occassion i can get severe gas discomfort, i ended up throwing up alot around 12 am mid. by three a.m. i got up took some tylanol and was preparing myself to go to the emergency room and while i was getting ready, all of a sudden the pain starting disapating. so i layed down again, was able to fall asleep, woke up at 6am feeling the sensation coming on again, so i took my tylanol and was able to fall asleep until 9am, still felt very tired, slept until 12pm noon. The pain is not gone, i have diarreah, and still mild to med discomfort which shoots thru my side and then into my lower back area

Brief Answer:
Possibly Acute Gastroenteritis

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcare-Magic
Greetings of the day

Dear Ms, Left sided pain is definitely not appendicitis. The type of pain you are experiencing is colicky pain abdomen. It usually occurs due to spasm of hollow viscus like intestine or Ureter. As you are experiencing pain in the flank area and also the back, possibility of Ureteric colic or Colitis needs to be considered.
Based on associated diarrhoea its more likely to be due to intestinal colic due to Acute Gastro-enteritis.
I would suggest you the following which will definitely provide the much needed relief

1. Antispasmodic: Drug Like Drotaverine or Hyoscine Butyl Bromide which relieves the spasm of smooth muscle will be helpful
2. Ensure good intake of water: it will prevent dehydration
3. Combination of Pantoprozole and Domperidone will be helpful for preventing vomiting.
4. Maintain nutrition
If the symptoms persists and pain is located in back with radiation along the side especially into the groin would make the possibility of Ureteric colic more likely especially if there are urinary complaints like burning urination, increased frequency. You may require further evaluation by Ultrasound abdomen.

Do let me know the progress and keep me posted , will try to get back to you at the earliest.
Wishing you speedy recovery.

Brief Answer:
They are over the counter

Detailed Answer:
Dear Ms

Both are over the counter medication which you can enquire from the local pharmacist. If its not available enquire about Antispamodic which are available. Pantoprozole is proton pump inhibitor which is gastric acid suppressant and Domperidone is anti-emetic.
