What Causes Lack Of Oxygen In Brain, Kidneys And Lungs In Newborn?

default
Posted on Mon, 6 Jul 2015
Question: Hi, we had a baby boy on 10th XXXXXXX When he was born, he didnt cry, his heart beat was low. Doctors did some basic treatment and was referred to NICU. He was on venti, struggled for about 30 hours and then... My wife had some gastric problem on 2nd, my inlaws gave her raw Asafoetida (heeng) with cold water after which she had Diarrhea. AFI dropped from 10 to 5 in one night. Next day Doc took her on drops for about 8-9 days (1 D5 and 2 RLs daily, AFI increased to 6.7) and then the baby was vaginally delivered on 10th. When baby didnt cry they said he aspirated his waste and there is congestion in his lungs due to which no oxygen in brain, kidney, lever, lungs, and heart is under deep pressure. Before all this story, 8 months were just the best as we took care of everything, at the time of delivery, baby weighed 2 Kg 900 Gms. Please guide me what went wrong in the complete pregnancy period so that we can take care in future.
Thanks

Brief Answer:
This is not related to heeng or diarrhea

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

I am sorry for your loss.

I have read you query and I understand your concerns.

Following is my reply:

1) First of all reduction of AFI was not associated with diarrhea or heeng.

2) Having heeng wont cause diarrhea and diarrhea wont cause such a severe drop in AFI. Amniotic fluid wont drop so easily just by diarrhea.

3) Drop in AFI was likely due to the fact that baby was in distress and was not passing urine and was swalowing more amniotic fluid.

4) This is probably the reason baby passed meconium ( waste) and aspirated as baby was sturggling inside womb.

5) I guess the CTG trace if taken little earlier might have shown this and doctor would have probably delivered earlier by cesarean section instead of waiting for a normal delivery which complicates this further.

6) This is not a condition which is going to repeat in next pregnancy. Hence you dont need to take any additional precautions in next pregnancy.

I hope I answered you query and addressed your concerns.

Let me know if you wish to ask any further questions. I will be glad to help you.

Regards,
Dr. Soumya
