What Causes Kidney Pain And Blood In Urine?

Posted on Fri, 9 May 2014
Question: Ive been having the pain in my kidney area off and on for the past 3 weeks. I am 49 and haven't had a period in 9 months, and the blood I first thought was just in my urine, now is seeming more like a period. If it was coming from a urinary or kidney issue, Would the blood leak like a period or only be in my urine? Also, if it was an infection, wouldn't I be feverish? I don't feel any urgency or burning, just pain in in the kidney area and a really, really late period.

Brief Answer: blood from urinary tract only in urine Detailed Answer: HI, thanks for using healthcare magic Blood from the urinary tract (bladder, urethra, ureter or kidneys) would only be seen when urinating. Blood in the urine is called haematuria. There are different causes of blood in the urine, infection is one of them but as you stated a urinary tract infection would be associated with other symptoms such as frequency of urination, burning or other discomfort on urination, possible change in colour or odour of the urine, fever, abdominal pain. If the blood is leaking like a period, it is not coming from the urinary tract. Blood from the genital system (cervix, vagina, uterus, tubes, ovaries) would be seen with or without urination. When there is a lot of blood, some would come out as a person urinates. This is common during menstruation. You may be perimenopausal. This is the period before menopause when the period change and a woman approaches menopause. Menopause is defined as a full year with no period. Perimenopause can last from months to years before a woman becomes menopausal. I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

Should I be concerned about the pain in my back that feels like a kidney issue? Could this be related to the abnormal period?

Brief Answer: not likely related to period Detailed Answer: HI Problems in the kidneys can cause back pain such as a stone, infection or rarely cancer but these would be associated with additional symptoms that are also related to the genital tract. Most other kidney diseases are associated with urinary symptoms but minimal or no pain at all. The absence of any other symptoms related to the kidneys makes the pain less likely to be related to the kidneys but if you are very concerned it would be best to rule it out with a urine analysis and possibly an ultrasound. Pain in the back is commonly related to soft tissue. There are muscles overlying where the kidneys are located and these can often be inflamed or irritated causing pain in this area. This is treated with rest and the use of anti inflammatory pain killers such as ibuprofen, cataflam or naproxen. Pain related to the genital system is not usually in that area, though everyone is different. It would normally be in the very lower back, suprapelvic region (just above the pelvis) or in the pelvis (either the right or left side of the lower abdomen on either side of the pubic bone). The pain is not likely related to your period. Please feel free to ask any other questions
