Starte with sore foot, thoguth it was his hsoes, Then he developed joint pain and stiffness primarily in knee, ankle and wrist. One joint a t a time usually. He also developed a red blotchy raxh on stomach, Ohterwise he feels fine and in flu like or overly tired. He has been attending classes. The Tufts did a CBC whiiich was normal. Sent to infectious disease guy. He tested for Lyme disease which came back negative. Waiting on a bunch of other blood tests for bacteria and virus, He was doing better, Rash aslmost gone feeling good, and this weekend he ran 3.5 miles and then played tennis. 2 hours later his knee pain was back and rash slightly worse. He does not really feel sick thought and contiinues to go to class. I am worried this is acute leukemia. He has no other symptoms. Worrie mom

Brief Answer:
Viral infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Symptoms of acute leukemia are an unnaturally pale complexion, fatigue, pain in the joints, repeated infections such as sore throats, nose bleeds and bruising easily.

Since your sons complete blood count is normal i do not think he is suffering from acute leukemia.

The cause of your sons joint pain and rash could be rheumatoid arthritis or systemic lupus erthyematosis or some viral infections.

Since Lymes disease has been ruled out u can consult your doctor to look for rheumatoid factor, viral markers, antinuclear antibody (ANA) in his blood.

An urinalysis to look for an increased protein level or red blood cells in the urine which may occur if lupus has affected his kidneys is also advised.

Thanks for your info. He gets the rest of his blood teasts back tomorrow-looking for additional bacterial and viral markers stc.

Does not acute leukemia progress quickly and would he not be much sicker. It's almost 3 weeks and he really does not feel sick, continues to go to classes, was able to run 3 miles etc. Just curious. I hear it gets progressively work and is ultimately fatal within 3 months or so without treatment. This has not been the case for him andh e is not bruising, out of breath or bleeding.

Thanks and I promise this is my last question:) XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
bacterial or viral infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Acute leukemia progresses very rapidly and immediate treatment is required and can prove fatal if not treated within 3 months.

Since your son is not feeling sick and almost 3 weeks have passed and he is able to run 3 miles and he is not having symptoms like bruising, out of breath or bleeding or enlarged lymph nodes in the neck, underarm, groin or above the collarbone you do not need to worry.

Your son's condition has been caused by some bacterial or viral infection and not acute leukemia.

If you have no more clarifications then please rate the answer and close the thread.

Wishing your son a quick recovery.
