default
Posted on Thu, 6 Aug 2015
Question: I had itching last week and it stopped. Then I went on a trip and last day of it I had brown discharge and slight burning and light itching. I took a yeast infection pill yesterday. The burning has stopped but I have a dark brown stringy discharge. What could it be?

Brief Answer:
Most probably due to vaginal infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to Healthcare Magic.
I am Dr Ramadevi Wani. I will be answering your concerns today.

From your notes it appears that probably the yeast infection has caused inflammation of the vaginal mucosa. Itching the vaginal mucosa must have caused abrasion of mucosa which is usually thin in this age group resulting in brown discharge.

Brown discharge in this age group can sometimes be due to thin vaginal mucosa(atrophic vaginitis) polyp or ulcer in the cervix (neck of womb) or polyp in the endometrium (lining of uterus).
Therefore please fix an appointment with your Gynecologist for internal examination.
I hope this helps.
If you have further concerns, I will be happy to answer.

There was not a lot of itching. When I urinate I see a stringy brown mucus come out. I'm just so worried. My doctor said on phone not cancer but I'm frightened as Internet says all post menopause bleeding serious.

Brief Answer:
It issue to infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome back.
Don't worry. As I already wrote to you in all probability it is due to the infection you had.
After the menopause, due to low estrogen levels in the body the vaginal mucosa is very thin and prone to easy bruising. So even mild itching is enough to cause bleeding.

For your reassurance you need to be examined by your Gynecologist.

If you have further queries, I will be happy to answer.

I had blood taken waiting on results. When I wipe it's dark brown. No discharge other than when urinating. Could this be uterine cancer? I have no other symptoms. I'm 54 and just over a year menopausal.

Brief Answer:
Get ultrasound of uterus and ovaries done

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome back.
I am of the opinion that it probably is due to infection and it is not uterine cancer.
What blood tests were done?
Did you get an ultrasound done? You need to do an ultrasound with measurement of uterine lining thickness. Normally it should be less than 5 mm.
Also get a biopsy of lining of uterus. In all probability it will be normal and it will relieve you of unnecessary tension.
I hope this helps.
If you have further queries, I will be happy to answer.

Postmenopausal bleeding is associated uterine cancer in 10% of cases

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome back.

The following statistics may help you.
The average age of occurance for uterine cancer is 60 years although 20-25% of cases occur premenopausally.
The life time risk of a Caucasian woman developing cancer is around 3%.
Postmenopausal bleeding is associated with uterine cancer in approximately 10% of cases.
Obesity, uncontrolled diabetes, early menarche are risk factors for uterine cancer.
Previous Use of oral contraceptives has a protective effect.
I advise you to have endometrial biopsy if on examination your doctor feels that the bleeding is from uterus.

Brief Answer:
Uterine cancer can cause intermittent Postmenopausal bleeding.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Uterine cancer can cause intermittent Postmenopausal bleeding. It need not be continuous.
But in your case I feel the bleeding probably was due to vaginal atrophy or infection.
With best wishes,
Dr Rama
