What Causes Itchy Raised Bumps All Over Body?

default
Posted on Tue, 24 Feb 2015
Question: For the past several months I have been getting raised lumps that appear at random places under my skin. They are itchy but not red and do not appear to be bites. I sleep with my husband and young son and they do not get them. They may appear any time during the day. They last for a couple of days and then disappear. There is no pus or anything like that. Sometimes one will appear on my leg, later in the day one in my neck or arm or lower face. I did ask my doctor about it but of course at the time of my visit I had none to show her. She suggested dry skin as the cause but I just don't think that's it. I have Crohns and an ileostomy but I don't think that's related. I've been a vegetarian for 30 some years--lacto/ovo though I avoid cow's milk. Two summers ago, whenever I picked cucumbers, I came in with terribly itchy lower arms and that has never gone away completely. I also had scabies several years ago and though was treated, it took longer for mine to go away than the other family members.

Brief Answer:
Possible Chronic Cholinergic Urticaria.

Detailed Answer:
Hi Mam,

I understand your query and concern.

As per your history you seem to have Cholinergic Urticaria/hives.

This can present as itchy papules,in response to a triggering environmental agent.

These are not contagious ,hence your husband and son does not seem to acquire them.

These Hives are an inherent response to environmental allergens.

Drugs like Long acting Desloratidine-Clarinex 5 mg PO once a day at bed time for 3 months will help.

Avoid all allergen exposure.

This rash is unrelated to Scabies in the past, nor It is related to Crohn's disease.

Dry skin will not always lead to such rash.

This rash is usually benign and will be well controlled with many preventive steps.

Thank you.
