Posted on Wed, 15 Jul 2015
Question: I have severe itching and visible live threadworms in my stool 36 hours after taking ovex. I have been eating loads of pumpkin seeds. The wriggling sensation is also in my vagina. I am getting it worse at night but loads during day too. I am struggling to stay calm and feel so panicky that medication is failing. I've carried out every possible cleaning ritual in the house and I've blasted the heating on full all day while I was out to try kill any eggs. Please help! I am going nuts. Also my last period was 1st XXXXXXX 2015 and my partner and I are trying for a baby. My usual cycle is 28 days. I took ovex and although too early to do a pregnancy test I am worried medication and worms could affect a pregnant.

Brief Answer:
it takes a week or 2 to complete removal of worms...

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query to hcm,
If you have already taken Ovex tabs which is the treatment of choice for thread worms, just 36 hrs before , it is natural to feel itchy along the anal canal for thread worms are to find a route to outside after medication as the glucose uptake which is required for their sustenance is blocked by medication, they will try to come out in stools and shall cause itching and mild discomfort in lower abdomen and an region. Ideally a repeat stool test is ordered after 2 weeks of drug intake, if still positive then a repeat course would also have to be undertaken. Hygiene is also important as it can easily spread to the other family members as well.
As you have already taken the medication before conception here it really is not going to affect your fertility or conception at present, but yes conception should be planned once complete course of medication is over and repeat stool test gets negative.
frozen fast foods and cold beverages should be avoided to extent possible .
Presently for the itching you may opt for an anti-histaminic like cetrizine 5mg twice a day , available on prescription and wait for the worms to extradite themselves.

Hi, couldn't conception have occurred prior to my taken the medication given my menstrual dates? Day of first period 1st XXXXXXX 2015 and took ovex sat 20th XXXXXXX 2015. Normal cycle 28 days.

I am passing masses and masses of live and dead worms. Is it normal to have such a massive infestation? I am shocked at the quantity, they're in clumps. I am also disturbed that so many are live given that it's been four full days since I took ovex. Is it possible I need higher dose due to infestation being severe? Itch is present much less.

I am now suffering panic attacks and struggling to cope mentally with this as I have a phobia of all things creepy crawly. Is there anything at all else I can do???

Thanks

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Please don't worry. If you are passing globs of worms still then it definitely indicates that you have severe infestation. You may require a repeat course of medication but it should be taken 7 days after the last course. As long as the worms are being evacuated no matter live or dead with itching having gone down considerably, you should be patient that the medication is working. Please don't panic. Its good that your gastrointestinal system shall be free of these worms hence which could have otherwise caused a major health concern in future.
Regarding your conception, it is unlikely that you would have conceived before 1st XXXXXXX as you menstruated normally, so the only likelihood is that you may have become pregnant in this cycle, and the only way at present would be to undergo a blood serum beta hcg test , which is the only test which can be sensitive after a week post last intercourse, way before urine pregnancy test can become positive. So get it done and if negative, it shall confirmatively rule out pregnancy and your concerns about worm medication affecting pregnancy can be allayed completely.
Stay calm and the wait for the worms to reduce slowly.
It is advised that you should repeat the course of medication again after a week from last dose considering the extent of infestation.
