What Causes Itching On The Body After Taking Nexium?

default
Posted on Wed, 23 Nov 2016
Question: I took a generic Nexium (esomeprazole) 40 mg pill this morning for the first time. Late this afternoon, I started itching all over. I have no rash. At 6 pm I took a Benadryl capsule and then another at 7 pm. My itching seems to be a little better but I still itch a little on my back and places on my arms and legs. My mouth is dry. I was given this drug because I might have a stomach ulcer. I have an endoscopy scheduled for next Tuesday morning.
Should I do anything else?
I also took a tablespoon of Mirolax in a glass of water about 4:30 PM for constipation which I have had off and on since my knee replacement surgery 5 weeks ago.

Brief Answer:
Consideration

Detailed Answer:
hello and thank you for sending the question.

It is possible that you had an allergy to this particular medication. I am glad that your symptoms have gradually improved. While you're itching might not be completely resolved at this point it sounds like the actual reaction is improving.

I don't think you need to take any additional medication including Benadryl at this point. I would recommend that you maintain good hydration for the time being.

I would also suggest that you contact your doctor to request an alternative to the Nexium.

If you developed worsening of your symptoms including rash, worsening itching or difficulty breathing then I would recommend that you go to your local hospital evaluation.

Otherwise it sounds like you are getting better. Again please contact your doctor to talk about alternative prescriptions.

Thank you again for sending the question.

Sincerely,

Dr. Galamaga
