What Causes Itching And Swelling In The Face?

default
Posted on Wed, 26 Oct 2016
Question: Over the last 48 hours I started with itchy skin under my chin and it has progressed into mild swelling and spread into my cheeks and lips and given me puffy under-eyes. There is no pain, but my lower cheeks (jowls) and under my jaw itch slightly. The mild swelling started yesterday and has not become any more severe; it has just spread up my face. I feel fine and don't have a cold or a fever. Could this be an allergic reaction of some kind? I am a two hour round trip from a doctor, and it seems like I'm fighting this off without the need for medication. I am highly fit; run 40-50 miles a week at 9000 feet; weigh 143 and am 5'7". I would like to give this a day to clear up without going to a doctor if possible.

Brief Answer:
allergic reaction.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for the query.
It appears to be an allergic reaction.
I treat such cases with a short dose of oral steroid.
Tablet prednisolone 40 mg single dose along with an antihistamine tablet is sufficient.
If it's not possible for you to get steroid just take an antihistamine tablet.
Usually such allergies are self limiting hence you can wait for a day before meeting your doctor.
If possible upload a photograph of the involved area.
This will help me in giving a closer diagnosis and better way of management.
Waiting for your response.
Thank you.
