What Causes Itching And Swelling In Mouth, Tongue And Lips?

default
Posted on Wed, 30 Mar 2016
Question: A couple of days ago, the roof of my mouth started feeling itchy. I hadn't eaten anything out of the usual. Then it developed a welty texture, and since so has my tongue, and my lips are slightly swollen. A family member said it had happened to them once and was told it was a virus and would take up to two weeks for it to go away. Also this morning, it seems that I lost a layer of skin on my tongue and on the roof of my mouth.. any thoughts?

Brief Answer:
Please provide a photo of your oral mucosa....

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have gone through your medical history carefully and understood your concerns.

1. Can you please provide a photo of your oral mucosa (tongue, lips, roof of the mouth) to evaluate the changes myself?

2. There are many causes of changes in oral mucosa including eating too hot foods? fungal/viral/bacterial infection?

After evaluating the changes in oral mucosa, we can determine the right cause and proper treatment. The culture of oral mucosa swab can also be helpful in proper diagnosis.

Looking forward to have the requested photo in!

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

I was hoping to get the requested photo. Anyway, I am happy that you got diagnosed correctly. From what you were describing, it seemed to be oral thrush (fungal infection ).

I hope they have prescribed antifungal oral gel. I prescribe oral antiseptic too for best results.

Wish fast recovery!

I tried to get a couple pictures for you, but was not able to get anything that was visible. They prescribed the swish & swallow medication... Nystatin, 5ml 4x/day. I'm hoping to see results soon so I can eat something other than plain yogurt or overcooked oatmeal. Any thoughts on how long it usually takes before there is improvement?

Brief Answer:
Be patient and wait for a few more days.

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

I have gone through the photos you sent in and it seems to be the case of oral thrush.

Nystatin can help, if no improvement within a week, then should change therapy : start oral fluconazole one tablet every week for 4 weeks or miconazole oral gel for 10 days.

Probiotics to add to therapy. I also advise my patients with oral thrush as you to apply a mixture of honey with baking soda orally.

Be patient and good results will be notable after 3 days of starting treatment.

Wish fast recovery!
