What Causes Itching And Burning Sensation Around Groin Area?

default
Posted on Tue, 2 Dec 2014
Question: Since long I have been suffering from itching and burning sensation around my groin area (3 years now). This has become an on and off affair. It gets cured to an extent on using ointment like surfaz but emerges again after 2-3 weeks. The area is usually moist and smells bad. The skin around the area has turned whitish to silver kind of (this, I think is due to application of ointment). I had seen images of inverse psoriasis, contact dermatitis and jock itch which resembles my situation. Please advice.

Brief Answer:
Need to take regular treatment

Detailed Answer:
Hi

I understand your concern regarding your skin problem and I hope I am able to help you in the same.
I have seen the attached pictures.
Although you might be right in the list of likely possibilities, but in my view,I suspect that you have developed an eczematised fungal infection of the groin area .
Such an infection needs continuous and long term treatment .
Irregular or inadequate treatment could be the cause of recurring infection .
In such cases ,I usually give topical anti fungals like clotrimazole for twice a day application to my patients .
This treatment has to be continuously followed for atleast three weeks so as to prevent inadequate treatment or recurring infection .
Once the infection clears up completely, using an antifungal clotrimazole containing dusting powder twice daily helps in preventing recurrence .
Complete avoidance of oil or any other cream application has to be done .
Most patients achieve complete healing ,however in few patients oral antifungal drugs have to be given along .
Also in patients with recurring infections ,a fasting blood glucose testing is necessary to rule out diabetes .

Hope it helps
