What Causes Irritation And Frustration After Acoustic Neuroma Removal?

default
Posted on Mon, 15 Dec 2014
Question: Hi, My husband had an acoustic neuroma removal about 2 mths ago. He is now very irritable and gets very frustrated. My sister also had brain surgery about 10 years ago and went thru the same issues. Her tumor was in a different location, but they put her on Ritalin for the first few mths and it really helped. My husband had to go out of town for his surgery and doesn't have a local doctor following him. He's a doctor himself. My question is, what is the best medication for him to take to help with his issues? Thank you so much

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting the query

I do understand your concern, I will try my best to help you.

Irritability following any major neurosurgical procedure is normal, because of the irritation of the nerves. Hence, in the post operative period he will be usually prescribed steroids, anti-edema and anti anxiety medicines.

Even though he is a doctor, I would still prefer him to be seen by his surgeon or the neurologist before proceeding for further medications. If you are not able to find the doctor, you can try medicines such as alprazolam or nitrazepam, but these are issued only with the doctor's prescription.

In your sister's case she was put on Ritalin as a precautionary measure to reduce these symptoms which your husband is presently undergoing.

My honest suggestion is to consult a good neurologist.

Hope I have answered your query; I will be available for the follow-up queries.
