What Causes Irritation And Depression Post Head Trauma?

default
Posted on Sat, 9 May 2015
Question: Hi, I am 49yrs. I fell backwards 14 days ago thinking there was a chair behind me and I fell backwards on the floor on the left side of my head. It was a hard fall. I felt dazed but never lost consciousness. No nausea or vomiting. No blurred vision or stiff neck (except my whole body was sore from the fall and I went to the chiropractor a week ago for an adjustment on my back). I am not on any medications or blood thinners.
I went to the emergency room 48hrs later. I only saw an Intern who said to go home and rest. He said the risks of doing a CT scan outweigh the benefits as the radiation could precipitate cancers/Lymphomas or Thryoid problems later on in life.
There was no obvious swelling, cuts, bleeding etc.
However 2 weeks on I feel very depressed, anxious, and irritable with my family. I just don't feel the same. My head feels kinda sore and bruised and sore to the touch.
The only other symptom I had was my head over that area sometimes gets like a feeling of hotness or like a hot flush over that area which is sore but it comes and goes. Haven't had any headaches but just a vagueness and I feel tired all the time.
Should I get it checked out again? I feel very anxious about this and feel like I have damaged my brain somehow? Do you think I should get a head X-Ray or a CT Scan?
Many Thanks XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
You should have a CT scan done.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.

Being irritated, depressed after head trauma, could have as a cause brain damage.

Most probably a brain contusion or a subdural hematoma.

Today's CT scans don't have that increased the risk of body damage, so in my opinion, you should have a CT scan and to ease your mind.

If any damage you be treated, if no damages you peace your mind.

Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Hi again,
Thank you. It was 2 weeks ago. Should I go to my GP or the Emergency Department?Dear Dr, Just wondering if an MRI would be OK for me? Would this have less radiation and would the test be sufficient?
Many Thanks XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
No need for ER.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again XXXXXXX

There's no need to rush into ER, unless your symptoms are worsening rapidly.

Instead you can discuss with your GP the possibility of having a head CT done, or if is possible, a brain MRI.

MRI doesn't carry radiation at all and gives more specific information about your problems.

Hope this helps. Wishing you good health.

Hi Dr Spaho,
Thank you so much. I have decided to pay for a MRI myself as I feel it is safer.
I think my GP thinks I am a hypochondriac but I think I will feel better having things checked out. Many Thanks again.
